You are describing: the response of the ear to a noxious injury LOUD SOUNDS are the most common (eg a gunshot etc) I suppose intense cold could damage as well but you have to check this with an Audiologist!! Ask your Primary Care Provider for a referral! Hope this helps! Dr Z
