i am unable to lay on my left side. if i do, within 45 minutes an agonizing pain develops (10+)  in the area of my left lung. i struggle to turn over to my right side, after which the pain gradually dissipates over a period of about 15 minutes?

: Time to see doc. Your pain suggests a radicular source or a pinched nerve at the level of the thoracic spine with other possibilities such as lung/ pleura, heart/pericardium still to be ruled out. The positional feature is critical and a focused physical exam will be needed.

Pleuritic pain: Yours is a typical description of pleuritic pain, which is caused by inflammation of the lining of the lung.  Typical in the context of viral infection.  See a doc if short of breath, especially if suddenly and dramatically worsens, palpitations, dizziness or any other symptom suggestive of something more insidious.

Dull pain: There are several things that can cause dull pain including cardiac pain or stomach issues.  Important things to examine are, what makes it better or worse, or are there any other associated symptoms such as shortness of breath or dizziness.  But would get seen by your physician.

Chest distress: For full evaluation and for peace of mind I recommend an evaluation by a cardiologist since you're also complaining of? palpitations. My impression is that your symptoms are not heart or lung related,however. Chest wall strain, tension or anxiety are common causes of these complaints.

Many possible: pains in this area are most commonly stomach/esophagus (GE jxn), musculoskeletal (rib/muscle/connective tissue strain) and less commonly heart or pericardium or lung or mesenteric. But for allopathic dx it takes about $1000 worth of tests as well as a skilled practitioner. Remember, the textbooks weren't written to serve women.

Probably not: Chest pain that occurs only in certain positions is generally not related to a disorder of the heart or lungs.  It is typically a musculoskeletal pain that resolves with time and\or mild painkillers like Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Alleve.
It is imperative that you stop smoking.  There is no reason to damage your heart and lungs while increasing your risk of bladder and other cancers.  Stop while you can.

Go to urgent care: It's cheaper. You may have pleurisy- inflammation of the lining of the lungs from bronchitis, asthma, viral/bacterial infection.
Other remote possibilities include pneumonia(usually presents with cough, fever, chills), clot in the lungs(pulmonary embolism(will present with fast breathing, shortness of breath and same symptoms as above, you need a chest ct scan  to rule this out)

Could : Be refered pain from gerd symptoms.  If treatment for gerd helps this pain.  Then helps confirm its cause.  If not relived with normal treatment get it worked up
