Not your heart: Pain that changes with respiration is caused by the muscles of your chest wall or the pleura (lining of the lungs). If you have no fever or cough, you might wish to try a simple analgesic like ibuprofen, naproxen, or Aspirin (full strength) to see if you get relief till it subsides. Otherwise, it's best to see your family doctor.

Reasonable concern: Chest pain can be a symptom of heart disease but may be may other things such as esophageal spasms, great vessel disease, respiratory disorders (asthma, COPD, bronchitis, infections), and muscle problems to name a few.  It really depends on the clinical situation and other symptoms you may be having. It may  be of a serious nature and you should discuss it with your doctor.

i have dull chest pain between my breasts... i am not sure if its reflux... i have this persistant pain since morning... my chest feels heavy or tight, like i need to inhale air for it to open up. should i worry?

Dull chest pain: Symptoms as described suggest gastrointestinal (esophageal) spasms.  Chest pain at age 39 should be evaluated by a physician, mainly to rule out cardiac conditions which can mimic these symptoms.

Chest pain: If otherwise healthy, then it may be a simple costochondritis (inflammation of the joints where the ribs meet the breastbone). This improves slowly with time. But, if you have been ill recently (like with a cold), it could be something more serious related to your heart or lungs, and you should go have it checked. If feeling otherwise well, use ibuprofen to help with the pain.

How fast is "fast"?: No fever? If you are an athlete with a baseline heart rate in the 40-50s (or not but in the 60-70s) and now you are pumping at a rate in the 90s or more, with a left-sided dull ache and painful breathing, then, yes. ER. They can evaluate you &amp; rule out worst case scenarios. Make sure to tell them if you or anyone around you travelled or been sick. Hydrate aggressively on the way.

Given your age and: sex it is unlikely that your symptoms are cardiac in nature but having said that it is true that women's symptoms are often atypical. It it probably anxiety but set your mind at ease by seeking medical evaluation and testing.

Chest pain: Please go to ER immediately . Could be reflux but could be cardiac  or PE , which requires emergent attention.

: These symptoms warrant evaluation by a physician. Even at your age a cardiac assessment is advisable, although other possibilities include a radiculopathy from an vertebral spur or bulging disc as well as an esophageal disorder. Exertional shortness of breath( could be from anemia), hypertension &amp; rapid pulse are concerning. I recommend starting with a visit to a cardiologist.

Is there a cough?: Depends on how long you've had this symptom. If it's been an intermittent problem for most of your life, it might be bronchospasm or a form of asthma. I have had several patients who were not diagnosed with asthma in childhood, but are symptomatic as adults. If this is a recent development and is associated with a cough, it could be bronchitis that is irritating your bronchus under the sternum.

Multiple things: Could be a problem with skin, nerves, muscle, shoulder, lung, heart, or stomach. See your doctor for a more thorough history, physical exam and further evaluation. If you sleep on your stomach you could have a neck strain that radiates pain to the chest or arm. Get checked out just to make sure.
