Building immunity: The infant has a weak immune memory, leaving the protection from single vaccines to a duration of months rather than years unless they receive booster doses. After the boosters are given, and the kid gets older, the protection can last years.Even then, some will require boosting (tetanus) well into old age to maintain a protective level.

Immune recognition: Your immune system reacts to the outside shell of the virus, tot the live inner workings.If given dead viruses, you get the benefit of a challenge of the immune system with the germ, with no chance of infection.

Hep B non-responders: 5-15% of people do not develop the appropriate antibodies following the 3 vaccine series for Hepatitis B.  If the series is repeated and there is again no response (30-50% of people WILL respond after a second series), the person is considered a 'nonresponder'.    Nonresponders should be counseled about Hep B transmission and offered HBIG if exposed.  A similar immunologic response occurs with MMR

No: This should not happen as the vaccine has reactivity with your immune system, not your liver.

No: That is not true. In fact, since the institution of the hep b vaccination, the incidence of sids has actually decreased.

In the early 90's, there was a concern because sids occurs in the first few months of life, and the first hep b shots are given in the first couple of months as well. So, the assumption was that they were related, but that is simply not the case.

Not plasma or serum: The hepatitis B vaccine that came out around 1981 was made using human plasma, and was very safe. In 1986, a new vaccine was approved that was made with DNA technology. We currently have 2 brands of hepatitis B vaccine in the US, and both are made with DNA technology, not from human serum.

Why: Both entities can kill you and a nurse is at higher risk of exposure to both. The feds require that I offer Hep B free of charge to my staff and I require that they get the flu shot every year if they plan to work for me. If you are not interested in getting these vaccines, please stay out of the health care field. We don't need infected nurses spreading the germs to unsuspecting patients.
