i have heard that limbs can survive up to 8 hours with no oxygen in the case of getting your arm or leg stuck when rock climbing or some other activity. is this true and are there any lasting conditions if the limbs were saved?

Accepted Answer

: There is no simple answer. If blood supply were occluded with a blood pressure cuff and the limb cooled down, it could last 8 hours. A traumatic event causing interruption of blood supply will have additional damage, like crush injury and may damage the limb even without complete interruption of circulation.

Have it evaluated: Knee pain can occur as the result of several issue. Have it evaluated by you family doc or a rheumatologist or orthopedist.

whenever i climb stairs, i can hear a noise coming from my knees. there's no pain but it's disconcerting. should i be worried?

Accepted Answer

Knees: Noise can sometimes emanate from movement of joints and usually represent joint fluid moving around.  If there is no pain or swelling, then it likely does not indicate anything serious.  But to be certain, it would be worthwhile to obtain an x-ray of the knees.

knees hurt after climbing 3 flights of stairs to apartment. dr said my kneecaps slide around, loose/flexible. any exercises to help and strengthen?

Patellar Tracking: Your description sounds like patellar tracking disorder. The kneecap (patella) shifts out of place as the leg bends or straightens. The kneecap shifts too far toward the outside of the leg. Weak thigh muscles, being overweight, poor alignment of the knee joints, any injury to the knee, all can contribute. Treatment has two goals: reduce pain and strengthen muscles around the knee. Hv dedicated PT.

i'm 28 years old, but my knees have started making these crackling sounds. what is it? there isn't any real pain involved, but they make this horrible noise when i work out and when i climb flights of stairs.

Accepted Answer

This : This is referred to as "crepitus".  As long as there is no pain, there is really nothing specific to be done about it.  If there is associated pain, it could represent inflammation, torn or uneven cartilage, or other issues that should be evaluated by a doctor.

Cartilage - meniscus: Crouching and climbing increase the load across the patellofemoral joint under the knee cap and cartilage damage in the area of the patella and trochlear groove would cause pain when crouching or climbing stairs. A meniscal tear would also likely be more symptomatic with crouching or climbing stairs. Orthopaedic evaluation is indicated.

Unilateral knee pain: If one knee is affected, often osteoarthritis is the problem. Meniscal injuries and tendinitis can co-exist (which can present with "giving way" of the joint - or instability). Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome has pain in front of the knee cap, with squats and when walking up stairs. PT to strengthen the quadricep muscle is required +/- knee brace. Short-term use NSAIDs (like Aleve) with meals.

Chondromalacia: Patellar chondromalacia refers to an irregular or rough cartilage surface of the undersurface of the patella or kneecap.  Pain that is most noticeable with climbing stairs (down or up) is usually related to chondromalacia patella.  Physical therapy to help strengthen your quadricep muscles can be very helpful for this condition.

Maybe: Stair climbing place significant impact on the knee cap.  So, if you have knee pain related to either inflammation or arthritis of the knee cap (front of knee), then stairs may not be he best things to do.  Along that line, things like kneeling or squatting are not great for knees as well.
