i have strong smelling,  cloudy, dark urine. i am retaining fluids in my lower extremities although i drink plenty of water, not dehydrated.  problem?

Maybe: Lots of things can make urine smell, but a history of dark urine with fluid retention (edema) raises significant concern for serious kidney problems. Anyone with symptoms like this should have blood and urine testing, and a good history taken, to help figure out if there's a serious problem. Dark urine can contain blood, and protein loss with kidney damage can cause the swelling.

my 5 year old son had tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy 6 days ago. he could not take the pain med. so alternating tylenol and motrin.he is still screaming in pain, refusing to drink. we've already taken him to er for fluids, he was moderately dehydrated. s

Mgt: I would suggest calling your surgeon's office or answering service right away. Tylenol (acetaminophen) and Motrin may be given in sips or mixed with something that tastes better. Please monitor his fluid intake and his temperature. He should not have any breathing difficulty or fever.

No: A white dry tongue can be a symptom of a number of different things besides dehydration, such as a fungal infection (oral thrush).  I recommend you make an appointment to see an ear, nose & throat doctor.

Your question is ???: Not so long ago the flu was always diagnosed by exam. Sometimes at a research hospital a swab could be sent to the virology lab &amp; take a few days for confirmation. After you have seen a few hundred cases you do the test more to confirm your suspicion. If it would make you feel better to have one go to an urgent care center &amp; have one done.

Dehydration?: How do you know that you are dehydrated? Do you have an excessive amount of urine production or copious amounts of diarrhea? Are you being kept from fluids? If you were seriously dehydrated, you would be weak, dizzy and would find it difficult to walk. You should see a physician and have some blood taken and have a urine analysis. You may be surprised to see that you're not dehydrated at all.

About  50 oz in 24 h: fluid requirment depends on  many factors,  2  major  factors are  temperature and physcial activiity  level,   At  normal  situatiation,  for a  47lb chld he should have about  1500ml of liquid in  24 hour, which comes to 50 oz  or  6  cups in  24hour, most of  which should be water.

Dehydration: You definetly seem to have a problem. You may have diabetes insipdius (di) or hyperglycemia causing you to have an osmotic diuresis. I assume that the IV fluids were given to you in an er, was blood taken and did you descuss your problem with ter doctor? Go to the er and get some blood work to get answers to your questions, as soon as possible, .
