Inner ear: You may have a focal inner ear issue, such as benign paroxysmal vertigo, Meniere's, or perhaps otolithic imbalance affecting one ear.  This should definitely be investigated by an otolaryngologist, and maybe MRI films can reveal answers.  There are many explanations for your symptoms, and most are benign, and easily treated.

: Do you lose your balance when you close your eyes and you are standing on level ground? You can see a neurologist for an evaluation to be certain there is not an issue. If you keep your balance with your eyes open, then keep them open when going up or down stairs to prevent a fall. Good luck!

No: If it happened once; no reason for any concern.
 If happens repeatedly and associated with headache/dizziness or vertigo some times then you should see your doctor for possibility of migrain.

Possible seizure: Verticle nystagmus is unusual, take a video of it with your cellphone and bring it to your pediatrician who will order an eeg and tox screen.

Retinal: images...including bright lights etc can persist even with open eyes in the dark!

This is probably normal but if you have any other visual symptoms get your eyes checked by an OPTHAMOLOGIST (M.D.)
