Questions: Do you have diabetes? Treatment with oral meds or insulin? In our Insulin dependent kids, we lower Insulin ahead of time and often for hours later.  We always ask them to carry glucose tablets or some other form of fast acting glucose and to stay well-hydrated. We also help to modify before and after meals if necessary. Most important: medication adjustment which has to be done by you & doctor.

Diabetes: Most common reason for high blood sugar is poor diet. Sorry but it's true. In other words, my patients can always out eat any amount of Insulin i prescribe. So it's very important to eat low glycemic foods as suggested by your diabetic education/nutritionist. Next most common cause is an underlying infection. Always check bottom of your feet for nails, objects, etc. Most important, follow up w/doc.

Discuss with doc: Congratulations on the improvement. But don't make changes in medications without first discussing with fp/diabetologist who is managing your diabetes. What are your fasting blood sugars? What was your most recent hba1c? Are your postprandial (after meal) sugars consistant [usually measured 2 hours after eating]? Are you having low sugar episodes? These are things to discuss with doc.

Tablets: Medications should not be exposed to extremes of temperature. If the exposure was not many hours long and if the tablets appear to be intact without discoloration or powderization occurring, the tablets should still be usable.If you still have doubts, show them to your pharmacist for examination.

No: they should be used in case of emergency only.  They will raise the blood sugar but they will also increase insulin production that will drop blood sugar more later.  It is best to eat multiple small meals or to eat something sweet followed by protein like peanut butter or cheese to be metabolized slowly to keep the blood sugar up

Depends: If you don't have diabetes it won't even go up enough to be noticed. If you have diabetes, it can go up and stay up for a long time -- unless you're on medication, in which case it may go up only slightly and drop down again quickly -- for instance if you've taken a recent injection of Insulin which is still acting in your body.

Absolutely: If you are a diabetic and you control is in quetion, you shoud check your blood glucose on  regular basis. If you are a type 2 and Insulin dependent, you definitely must check your glucose levels. Discuss this wtih your phsyican or a certified diabetic educator.

i took one glucose tablet (otc) 5-10 minutes before a urinalysis and i got 100mg/dl. could the glucose tablet cause that?

Glucose: If you took "glucose tablet" 5-10 minutes before taking blood sugar test, it will definitely increase the blood sugar reading. The right way to check it is to fast over night for 8 hours and then check "fasting blood sugar" in the morning.

No, not true: Hi. How much 1 unit of rapid insulin (Humalog, Novolog, or Apidra) lowers glucose depends on each patient&#x27;s insulin sensitivity, and therefore varies from patient to patient. Using your correction dose, check your BG about 2 and 4 hours after the dose and before the next meal to help define how your body responds to that dose. Those data help you define how to dose yourself. Good luck and health!

are there any benefits for a person without diabetes to take a glucose tablet when eating a meal is not possible?

Not much: Glucose will provide some calories but no protein or other nutrients. If you can't sit down and have a balanced meal a good quality breakfast bar or energy bar might be a better choice. An apple of other fruit would be another consideration.
