No: Keloids result from an excessive bodily reaction to a wound. Unlike normal healing which lays down scar tissue(collagen) to close a wound, a keloid forms when the degree & magnitude of this process is excessive. And unlike a hypertrophic scar which is an excessive amount of scar tissue within the confines of the injury, a keloid results when the process extends into the normal surrounding tissue.

Yes: Any chronic irritation of the skin can cause a break with subsequent scar formation & keloid. Consult a dermatologist to rule out skin cancer.

Keloid treatment: There is no "cure" for keloids. Keloids can be problematic, particularly if enlarging, are painful or itch, or ulcerated and bleed. For small ones silicone sheeting or gels may help decrease redness and height, but there is very little you can do on your own. Treatment typically requires steroid injections, excision with repair, or a combination of both.

Really none.: If you have a true keloid scar the best first line treatment is steroid injection.  If that fails to improve the keloid to your satisfaction the next option is excision which comes with very high recurrence rates (and can come back worse than the original) and a postop regimen of silicone, pressure, and in severe cases even radiation treatment.  See a plastic surgeon or dermatologist.

We have been working with excision and injection of Mitomycin c in the incision with fair results. Depending on the size and the width of the keloid.

Keloid Treatment: Keloids are "overhealing" outside of the area of actual trauma.  They can be helped by injections of an anti-metabolite, 5 flourouracil, done  every few weeks in the office to help soften and shrink them sometimes they have to be irradiated or excised. Nd-yag laser tx's and topical silicone can help take the redness out.  Laser kills hair follicles, that may be a source of inflammation ;  growth.

Hey: Keloids are overgrown scar tissue, they can regrow, the can be treated with surgery and sometimes injection, the problem is they have a tendency to regrow even after treatment, so they can be difficult to get rid off, and yes they are at least partly hereditary.

Scar: A keloid is just a prominent scar.  Some people simply get more prominent scars when they are injured; it is not dangerous or a sign of something more serious.  Treating keloids, however, can be difficult, as trying to cut them out can sometimes cause more scarring.  There are treatments such as steroid injections, laser or other; see your primary care provider or a dermatologist.

Keloids: When a keloid forms the collagen is abnormally layed down causing the lesion to grow outside of the scar. Siilicone is good for fresh scars and hypertrophic scras however kenalog (triamcinolone) injections into the keloid is a good first round treatment option. This is routinely performed by plastic surgeons and dermatologist.

No permanent cure: Good treatents are available but unfortunately there isn't a permanent cure for keloids. They are a result of abnormal scar healing caused by trauma or injury to the skin. Common causes are surgery, cuts, ear piercings, shaving, but can also result from acne breakouts and insect bites. Avpid itching, rubbing, scratching, or anything that can cause irritation of the keloid which makes it worse.
