Expected: The D is a stimulant and thus it is not surprising that you end up with insomnia.  Mucinex (guaifenesin) D will cause similar side effects.  Nasal steroid is far more effective and would not cause insomnia or drowsiness.

i am debating  between taking sudafed or mucinex  i have a lot of mucus  and nasal congestion. which one will you recommend provide faster releive?

NaSal congestion: My Inez has quafenisen and sudafed in it.  The guiafenisen is going to mobilize your secretions.  
The sudafed will dry you up.  Either one would be fine.  Good luck and feel better!

Probably: NOT related to the Mucinex HOWEVER STOP IT!
If your GI symptoms continue after stopping the medication consult with your PCP (Primary Care Physician)

OTC cold meds: They pretty much work the same way. Cold symptoms should not last for more than 7-10 days. See a local doc if it does not resolve after that period or gets progressively worse.

started with chest/nasal congestion and sore throat when swallowing 2 days ago. started mucinex/claritin. woke up this a.m. with a lot of phlegm being coughed up and it tastes extremely foul and bitter. what causes terrible tasting phlegm? infection?

Doctor can examine: New throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep). Throat lozenges and Tylenol (acetaminophen)can temporarily decrease pain.

Depends on age: It depends on the age of the child - i actually recommend you talk with your pharmacist as their are dozens of cold medications in the over the counter aisle at the pharmacy.

FEVER: It is not okay to go to work with a fever.  It is extremely rude to take a contagious illness to the work place and expose your co-workers and customers to this illness.  You can return to work when you are fever free for 48 hours.

hi there docs. i am suffering only from nasal congestion and a smidgen of post nasal drip. twice a day for the last 4 weeks i use illiadin 0.05% to decongest & it works. is this something to worry about or should i continue to just do as im doing?

Yes, usually: Nasal congestion and runny nose can be a symptom of many disorders.  If the underlying problem is allergies, nasal steroid sprays are very effective and antihistamines help.  If symptoms are from a cold, it will just take time.  If symptoms are from sinus infection, then antibiotics will be useful.  If symptoms are related to pregnancy, they will resolve when the baby is born.

ive chronic nasal congestion. my ent couldnt figure out the problem. the only thing that work is nasal decongestants, but can i use them everyday?

Decongestants: Depending the type you are taking and your medical history decongestants can be taken safely.  They can be taken everyday as long as you follow the recommended dosages and frequencies.  If you have hypertension or cardiovascular disease, you should not take decongestants oral ones.  Topical sprays should only be used for colds or sinus infections for 2-4 days then stopped.
