Depends on the type: It is well known that unopposed estrogen therapy can cause endometrial cancer. While some literature suggests that there is a relationship between "hrt" (ie: estrogen/progesterone) and breast cancer, there are no definitive studies confirming a cause and effect relationship.  Yet, is is also known that some, but not all, breast cancers will grow faster when stimulated by estrogen.

Increases risk: Hormone replacement therapy (such as Premarin (conjugated estrogens) etc) have been shown to increase the risk of certain cancers (such as breast cancer) in women who have a history of taking such medications.

Benefits far: Outweigh risks in the normal person, uncommon it can cause those problems for most people, benefits are no hot flashes good for the vagina and lower third of the bladder, good for bones, may be good for skin also and able to sleep better cause no hot flashes , I have many pts on hrt without any problems.

See below: Certain hormones, especially longer use of estrogens, can increase a person's risk of breast cancer. Estrogen is listed as a known carcinogen on the fda web site & there is a class action lawsuit ongoing against premarin (conjugated estrogens). It depends: All are potentially safe.  The risk of estrogen therapy, although low, should be thoroughly discussed before starting, including the risks and benefits.  Other hormonal therapies are generally considered safe as long as normal youthful physiologic levels are maintained.

Yes, ERT does: Unopposed estrogen therapy (ert) does increase the risk of ovarian cancer. The jury is still out on HRT although the women health institute study did find that continuous combined HRT may increase the risk of ovarian cancer slightly. Keep in mind that ovarian cancer is rare, much rarer than breast cancer. See your doc for a frank talk on this.

Well: Low dose hrt can be used in those who are treated with hysterectomy gor endometrial cancer, you said bilateral, did you mean endometrial cancer or was that typo?

prior to going on hrt post menopause and now moving off it two years later my bp escalates. cancer through most of my family. am i better to stay on?

Better to stop: Hrt raises your risk of breast cancer and blood clots. Early in the postmenopausal period, it may reduce your risk of heart disease but not as time goes on. You eventually would have to stop regardless. Might as well be now.

what can be done for endometriosis? my wife 33 is in agony every mth.does hrt increase risk of cancer? we can't have more kids due to severe adhesions

What?: first what do you mean night seizures on her past medical conditions.
second, if there is no plan for children, discuss with the GYN the option of having hysterectomy.

should men receiving zoladex (goserelin) for prostate cancer also be on some form of hrt?

Accepted Answer

Counterproductive: Zoladex (goserelin) eliminates all production of testosterone by the testes.  Hormone replacement therapy would be counterproductive
