: Levels between 5.7 and 6.4 indicate prediabetes. You should strive to get the A1c under 5.7 by adhering to a proper diet, attaining ideal weight and getting regular exercise. I don't recommend medication for prediabetes regardless of age.Seeing a dietician for a one time consultation is worthwhile. You'll get your ideal weight,how many daily calories for your lifestyle, &amp; get a sample diet

there are 8-9 other non-insulin drugs for diabetes without these risks

we don't use it-take patients off it

If you are in the 40s and newly started to control diabetes you need to see a diabetes specialist who will help you rid yourself of diabetes.

Dangerous: Insulin or diabetes medications can severely drop your blood sugar causing confusion, coma, and possibly death.  You do not want to use it unless you know you have diabetes.  Diabetes is a life long disease so denying it will only prolong the inevitable.  Eventually you will have to face it to be treated properly.

No: At present no oral medications are felt to be 100% safe in pregnancy but their are some new studies to support the use of one or two classes of oral medications but i would discuss the risk versus benefit of such with your ob.

Not much: Glucose will provide some calories but no protein or other nutrients. If you can't sit down and have a balanced meal a good quality breakfast bar or energy bar might be a better choice. An apple of other fruit would be another consideration.

Hypoglycemia: Take control of hypoglycemia by increasing your food intake for a few days. If that is not improving over a day or two you MUST see your doctor.
