i am on several different meds that can cause constipation.i forgot i took milk of magnesia this morning (60 ml of phillips cherry flavored) and then took 300 mg of citrate and 150 mg combined of malate, glycinate, and taurateis this bad??

: Unless you have kidney dysfunction, this level of magnesium intake is not dangerous. High doses of magnesium cause loose stool, so if that is not happening, then you’re fine. I’m the future though, stick with the msg citrate &amp; milk of magnesia varieties for constipation. The other more expensive magnesium supplements are best for those who desire to boost mag levels, as they are better absorbed.

if a person remains frequently constipated and takes b complex supplement . will constipation lead to poor absorption of vitamins like b12, b6 ,b3, zinc etc from pill? to what degree/extent is the absorption compromised? percentages?

Depends on severity: In general, constipation does not interfere with nutrient absorption. A constipated person wants to figure out the cause. If constipation is due to slow movement of food and poop through the gut, then the things people try are vegetables, water, prune juice, prunes, fiber with water, Miralax, (polyethylene glycol) Senokot or other senna, milk of magnesia, etc...  One's doctor can help.

does chronic constipation lead to lack of absorption of vitamin b12 given in pills? vitamin b12 deficiency causes constipation? chicken or egg first?

It's really not: the chicken or the egg because even minor deficiencies of vitamin B-12 can cause anemia, fatigue, shortness of breath and weakness. ... B-12 deficiency can cause decreased appetite, constipation, diarrhea or alternating constipation/diarrhea, weight loss and abdominal pain.  Constipation is a minor player if at all.

Mag citrate works: You should be able to move your bowels after the mag citrate. Sometimes, constipated patients also benefit from a suppository or a small enema to help the bowels move from the bottom up, in addition to from the top down.

hmmn: Sounds like you have severe constipation.  Once your doctor rule out other causes of constipation. Your doctor can put you on a bowel regiment  such as  fibers , stool softener.

Not recommended: You do not want to take a laxative daily because if you do your colon will become dependent on it and you will not be able to have a bowel movement without it. Increase water and fiber. You can try a bulking agent like mirilax as needed. See your doctor for other treatments available or to diagnose the cause.

why is magnesium oxide always recommended by doctors while it has the lowest absorption rate of all types of magnesium? why not chelated glycinate?

Magnesium: Magnesium glycinate is a chelated form that tends to provide the highest levels of absorption and bioavailability and is typically considered ideal for deficiency. Magnesium oxide is a non-chelated type of magnesium and is less well absorbed.  Why magnesium oxide is often prescribed likely has to do with its lower price and stool softening properties.

will taking magnesium glycinate at the same time with estarylla decrease the effectiveness due to absorption or is it okay to do so?

: It is best to take them at seprate times. It will not affect effectiveness of your BC pill

Anything that: Is a cathartic will decrease the absorption of any food or medication by inducing diarrhea and not allowing food or medication to be in the GI tract long enough to be absorbed.

is citrate of magnesium safe to relieve  constipation?  it's been three days constipated and too much horrible gas

Accepted Answer

Safe on occasion: It is generally safe if used in the appropriate dose and not frequently, if you have no other medical problems (specifically kidney problems.).
