how do you diagnose  retinal tears and vitreous detachment ?

Dilated exam: A dilated eye examination can reveal these problems. Eye drops are used to stop the pupil from constricting when light is shone into them. This helps the doctor get a good view of the entire retina to check for these sorts of problems.

Accepted Answer

Could happen: Something about your eye led to a retinal tear at a youngish age.  This could still be at play although presumably your tear was fixed with laser or surgery.  The risk even at that is not too high, just a little higher than the average person.  You should talk with your retinal surgeon about any special risks you have due to the character of your eye.

if more (enough) vitreous degeneration occurs before pvd, does the vitreous come off easier than usual with lesser risk of retinal tear?

Not known: This is not known.  However it seems that characteristics of the retina have more to do with the occurrence of a retinal tear than the characteristics of the vitreous.  That is, a thin myopic retina is more likely to tear than a thicker one.

can an opthalmologist see retinal tears or vitreous detachment with ophthalmoscope?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Most of these will be detected, given appropriate symptoms such as light flashing, floaters, vision changes, etc., by the use of an indirect ophthalmoscope after eye dilation.  The indirect ophthalmoscope looks like a cave diving light and gives a stereoscopic, panoramic view of the back of the eye.  Tears, pathology, detachments, hemorrhage can all be seen with this technique.

can i expect an increase in floaters after undergoing barrage laser procedure for lattice on retina? i mean can the laser cut through the vitreous?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Vitreous separation and vitreous hemorrhage cause vitreous floaters in your vision.  This can also result in hazy vision.  The laser procedure helps to prevent a tear from occurring at the edge of the lattice degeneration and progressing to a retinal detachment; however it does not resolve the vitreous floaters.  The vitreous are unaffected by the laser.

Yes depends: Yes this is possible especially if the vitreous hemorrhage is caused from a vitreous detachement which is different from a retinal detachment. Patients with a vitreous hemorrhage from a vitreous detachment should be watched to ensure they do not develop retinal detachment.

Synonymous: A "full" PVD and a vitreous detachment are the same thing, albeit a "full" one probably was meant to tell you that the posterior vitreous has completely detached from the posterior part of your eye. The vitreos humor, as we age, begins to separate from the posterior of the eye, generally without compromise to the retina or blood vessels. This takes awhile to complete itself (weeks to months).

can examination with slit-lamp (dilated pupil) determine if a tear or retinal detachment has occurred? also if post vitreous detachment is occurring?

Accepted Answer

Usually not: Retinal detachments and vitreous syneresis are usually detected with and hand held or head mounted ophthalmoscope.  The slit lamp looks only at the front 1/4 of the eye and would only see an extremely large detachment..

good morning doctors. what is the likelihood of a posterior vitreous detachment becoming a retinal tear or a retinal detachment in a significantly myopic older adult? is it safe to travel and not be near a hospital or have access to medical doctors?

Accepted Answer

: A "posterior vitreous detachment" is already a partial retinal tear.  Get a referral to a University Medical School ophthalmologist for guidance, as recurrence or more serious detachment is possible.
