It can but rarely: Almost any antibiotic can cause c. Difficile overgrowth and diarrhea or colitis.  Vancomycin almost never does.  Azithromycin and Doxycycline are among the antibiotics with the lowest risk.

: This would be little or no risk. But this is a peculiar treatment. When doxycycline is needed, almost always treatment is for at least a week. The most common reason for doxycycline is chlamydia or nongonococcal urethritis (NGU). These require 7 days treatment.

taken doxycycline in the past and may need to do so again. been fine w/it in the past, but recently have high bp. is doxy still safe for me, now that i have high bp at times? allergic to other antibios; history of c diff; i'm comfortable w doxy; safe?

: Doxycycline is a very safe drug and has no effect on blood pressure. In terms of drug allergy, it does not cross react with any other antibiotic except those of the same type (tetracyclines). If your doctor recommends doxycline as the best antibiotic for your condition, you should take it without worry.

just finished flagly for c diff; i now have symptoms of prostatitis and my dr wants me to take doxycycline 100mg twice a day and vancomycin (250mg/4xday). is this necessary to prevent c diff again?

Post C Diff Rx: Your doctor is undoubtedly attempting to eradicate the prostatitis, not to prevent another outbreak of c. Difficile. Many cases of prostatitis are non-symptomatic, but it sound like yours is, so it is best to eradicate the infection.

my dr suspects ibd (due to stool sample result) - awaiting colonoscopy. taking doxycycline for lyme. am i likely to get c diff? currently have upper abdominal cramps, are they normal with doxycycline?

Not uncommon: Doxycycline needs be taken with food but even then many people have gastric upset from it.  It is impossible to predict whether you will have C difficile problem but I would recommend you take a probiotic whenever you are on an antibiotic.  If your stomach still bothers you , ask your doctor to Rx an alternative.

why would my hemoglobin drop from 14.0 - 13.0 in two weeks? they performed cbc, hidden blood stool test, and c-diff test. all tested good except hemo. was taking doxycycline for 12 days. my stomach pain has been minimizing & acid reflux too.

Hydration status: With every test there is a sampling error that can lead to a different result. Also, how well hydrated you are versus dehydration can result in dilution of your blood cells and show a drop. Finally, if all your other tests are normal you don't need to worry. Try to focus on eating foods that are rich in iron and follow up with your Doc at your next blood test. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Yes: Any antibiotic including, Doxycycline can increase your risk of getting c. Difficile diarrhea. However, because Doxycycline has poor activity against anaerobes (the majority of bacteria found in your colon) it is less likely than other antibiotics to cause c. Difficile diarrhea.

Unlikely: Tinnitus is not a reported recognized complication of doxycycline. That being said, you may have a reaction that is specific to you and unusual. If so you should contact your doctor and consider a change in meds.
