Depends on symptoms: Metamucil is a bulk forming fiber supplement laxative.  How many to take depends on your symptoms and your dietary fiber intake. I would shoot for 25 to 40 g of fiber a day in your diet. You can adjust the dosage of Metamucil to help you achieve symptom control. I would not go over 40 g a day total. Remember to stay hydrated, and to be wary of drug-food interactions. Good luck.

is pure psyllium husk powder as good as manufactured products such as metamucil to maintain daily bowel regularity? how much should be taken daily?

Fermented...: Many fibers, particularly the water insoluble kind (psyllium) are readily fermented by your gut flora ; may cause bloating/gassiness. Choose your favorite depending on your tolerance to taste, texture, volume, dosing. If your goal is bowel regularity, remember that normal stool frequency fits a spectrum from 3-4 movements/day to one every 3-4 days. Dose is individualized, as dietary fiber varies.

If impacted consult your Dr. Prunes, prune juice and dried apricots are often effective laxatives. Reduce sweets, simple carbs and to some extent less meat and chicken&gt; Increase fruits and vegetables and exercise.  A stool softener may help if stools are very hard. Chronic constipation: Large-caliber stools mean that your son's colon has enlarged from long-standing constipation & that referral to a pediatric gastroenterologist is warranted. A " clean-out" has to be done before MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) will work. After it's done, he'll need treatment for at least 6 mos. To reduce the risks of medical & behavioral complications of chronic constipation. See his pediatrician first.
