It is unpredictable: The problem is not serious just painful. It is rather unpredictable but usually improves eventially. Treatment with medications like Ibuprofen or heat over the area may cause improvement. Sometimes we inject the area with medicine to relieve the pain. Of course, exercise may temporarily make the pain worse and rest may help it.

See a cardiologist: Your symptoms are much more than explained by costochondritis. You need to get a bit detailed evaluation by a cardiologist before dismissing it as mere costochondritis.  Hope that you find answers to your problems soon.

Yes. It gets better.: Costochondritis is a condition causing chest pains due to inflammation of the cartilages which connect the ribs to the breastbone (sternum). It is most common in young women and is often confused with pain from the heart. The outlook is very good and usually anti-inflammatory medicines will decrease the discomfort.

Usually viral illnes: Costochondritis, or tietze's syndrome, is an inflammation of the costochondral junction along the anterior chestwall adjacent to the sternum.  It is usually caused by a viral illness, and like all viral illnesses who gets it is hard to predict.  No genetic predisposition has been suggested.  A strong immune system is probably the best defense, i.e., good rest, good nutrition, etc.

Weed: Costochondritis is an inflammatory condition of the cartilage between the breastbone &amp;ribs. It has various causes but in my experience the causes is usually unknown. I doubt smoking weed would cause it unless you have a chronic cough from smoking.
