Yes: Ibd is a risk factor for colon cancer. The risk in ulcerative colitis increases the longer you have the disease, and frequent colonoscopies are recommended with random biopsies to look for abnormal cells.  In Crohn's disease, the risk is higher than the general population, but is not as high in ulcerative colitis patients.

Not necessarily: Constipation is not necessarily a sign of colon cancer. Constipation is usually caused by problems with diet - not enough fiber, not enough fresh fruits/ veggies, not drinking enough water, etc. It can also be caused by low activity level. Some patients have IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) which can cause recurrent constipation. If the constipation is new with none of the above changes, see doc

Depends: Except many of the symptoms of IBS could actually be indicative of a colon cancer and many dietary irregularities associated with IBS can themselves increase your risk for colon cacner development. Ibs should be a diagnosis of excluding more serious diagnoses.

There are many: Reasons for intestinal inflammation whether or not someone has colon cancer and is utilizing chemotherapy.  Without having more information like the symptoms associated or the circumstances around how the inflammation was identified, it's difficult to better guide you.  Though this is a question that a patients oncologist should readily be able to help out with.

Can if: It is a rectal cancer usually. Actual colon cancers may cause a change in your bowel movement with no pain unless the pain is from constipation or diarrhea due to the tumor. But rectal cancers or anal cancers can indeed cause pain during and after the evacuation.

I : I am sorry to hear about how poorly your sister is doing. I want to make sure i understand your question. Your sister has bowel cancer. She developed a post - operative infection and has been extremely ill. Could the infection have led to brain damage?   Of course I do not know very much about your sister's complications. Sometimes an infection in the gut, can travel into the blood.  Infected blood travels to the brain, where it can cause harm. Also, when a person is very sick and they undergo surgery, they can have complications with anesthesia, a lot of things can happen.   As the body gets sicker it can affect organs other than just the colon, and those organs can either stop working or work poorly.  It can become like a snow ball effect. I suggest that you talk to your sister's doctor and ask him or her to explain what has happened. If the doctor uses too many big, medical words, ask him or her to use plain language.  I hope this is helpful.

what causes hemoglobin and hematocrit to be low but mcv levels, iron, and ferritin levels are normal. been having this problem for 8mths no blood in stool. guaiac test was normal. bowel changes mostly soft stool w/ mucus. could this be colon cancer?

: Chronic normochromic, normocytic anemia with normal iron parameters,normal Vit B12 levels and normal serum electrophoresis to rule out multiple myeloma can be caused by chronic inflammation. If you or your physician are still concerned, consult a hematologist for evaluation and advice.
