Need more info: You said you have tried everything.  There is typically a two-fold step to treating allergies.   First is to try and identify your most common allergies and eliminate them from your living environment.   Skin testing is the most effective (with some flaws).  Common medications include Claritin, Xyzal, Allegra, and Benadryl (diphenhydramine).   There is also immunotherapy (shots or sublingual) that take a year.

Timing: Antihistamines work by blocking histamine receptors in your body.  If the receptors are all full of histamine already (reaction has occurred), then there is nowhere for them to go and it will not make a difference in allergy symptoms.  If you take them before exposure to allergens they can block the receptors and you will have less symptoms.

Good question!: It is not clear why some persons respond more favorably to some antihistamines and not others.  There are theories, but still not completely known. In my experience zyrtec (cetirizine) works very well for most people. Also, the approved doses of antihistamines were determined based on the minimal effective dose for the majority of people.  Some persons may just need a higher dose!
