Oh, MUCH more...: ABO type, Rh type, and a screen for any unusual antibodies from other groups that may affect the safety of transfuson. Typing blood is an extremely deep subject and there are actually dozens of types with which I'm experienced and many more that I've only read about.

Blood test: It is a simple blood test and your doctor can order it. If you are healthy enough to donate blood, contact your local blood center and offer to donate blood. If you are found to be eligible to donate, they will do blood group typing and you can ask them for the results.

The negative doesn't mean much except when the father of a developing fetus is positive and the mother is negative. On a subsequent pregnancy, it can cause problems for the fetus but this is prevented with a medicine called Rhogam.

Several: An rh-negative pregnant woman is screened for antibodies against d (the main rh antigen) and pregnancy is followed for signs of trouble.  If a previous or another type of mismatch is suspected, additional labs are done.  If suspected in a newborn, baby gets a direct Coombs for antibodies on red cells.

Jaundice: If you have type o or negative blood, and your spouse is different, your child could be born with type a or b, or rh pos blood. If that happens, there could be an antibody reaction at birth. However, hospitals test for that, and if it's noted there's a difference, they look for jaundice and treat it if seen. Truthfully, as it's caught early, it's not that big a deal anymore.
