i started taking bactrim at 8pm tuesday and took an hiv, syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia test at 4 pm on wednesday. my tests just came back negative, could bactrim have affected the results?

: Bactrim is entirely ineffective against syphilis and cannot affect that result, no matter how much of the drug or how long you take it. It might or might not cure gonorrhea or chlamydia, but not that quickly. Your test results are completely reliable.

will zithromax and suprax cause a false negative chlamydia test eight days after treatment?  what about a false negative gonorrhea test two days after treatment?  the test was an naat?

See below: If you were treated with 1.0 gm of Zithromax for chlamydia infection and tested negative by NAAT 8 days after, you should be assured cured. Not a false negative.  
For gonorrheal infection, current treatment of choice is Zithromax plus ceftriaxone injection.  I would recommend a test-of-cure NAAT  14 days after treatment, especially if you are still symptomatic.

i have been taking augmentin 875/125 for 7 days (cat bite) and have an sti test, chlamydia and gonorrhea, on friday. could the antibiotics cause a false negative?

: The tests today generally depend on finding the DNA of the germs, not live germs. The Augmentin might kill off some of the germs, but that level of treatment is unlikely to remove all traces of their dead bodies from your test site.

i was prescribed 500mg of amoxicillin twice a day for an ear infection. three days after starting the medication, i took a urine based naa test for chlamydia and gonorrhea, result was negative. could the amoxi have caused a false negative that soon?

: Yes, amoxicillin could work that fast to make a test negative, but usually by curing the infection, not just suppressing it. (Amoxicillin isn't routinely recommended for either gonorrhea or chlamydia, but usually would cure either one.) You could consider another test 1-2 weeks after completing the amoxicillin, but it really isn't necessary unless you need the reassurance.

Not that fast: Not enough time for the med to clear all Chlamydia genetic material. If the test was negative either it was done poorly and a false negative or the germ was not there to begin with.

Bactrim for STD: NO   Please if you think you have either of these - see a doctor for the proper treatment.   Taking antibiotics indiscriminately is dangerous

: More like a successful treatment or did not have the disease. False neg is when you have the disease and the test comes out negative

Accepted Answer

Possible: There can be false-negative findings and the easiest way to prove this is to get retested.  If you have been having unprotected sex and are symptomatic would also want to be tested for other stds, including hiv. Good luck.

: Possible but unlikely. Amoxicillin is not reliable against either infection, but might work for some. More important, the test detects the organisms' nucleic acids (DNA, RNA), which persists a few days after the organisms are killed, and the test usually remains positive a few days even when treatment is effective. The bottom line is that it is very unlikely you had either one.

Probably not, but...: Prostatitis isn&#x27;t an STD, and with negative gonorrhea and chlamydia, probably no PID risk for your wife. However, some docs mistakenly diagnose nongonococcal urethritis (an STD) as prostatitis. If you&#x27;ve had abnormal discharge from your penis, it&#x27;s probably NGU, not prostatitis. If so, and if you had sex w/ your wife after the source of your infection, your wife could be at risk &amp; needs treatment.
