my son is taking ativan (lorazepam) .5 mg. works ok but makes him lose weight. 25lbs in 6 1/2 months. this makes his anxiety go up. what other pill works like ati?

Chronic use Ativan (lorazepam): While this is a very common story, it is not good medicine to be on daily or chronic use of benzodiazepines. Ativan (lorazepam) is in this class of drugs.

It sounds like he is having negative effects from this and he should, in my opinion, stop the medication and get to his psychiatrist...Or choose a new mental health provider to discuss safer and more effective drugs to prevent anxiety

Rare wt gain Ativan (lorazepam): Lorazepam if anything more commonly although not all that commonly causes weight loss. On those extremely rare occasions where it can cause weight gain, the weight gain tends to be rapid and it is quite obvious that it is due to the medication. If you notice rapid weight gain obviously tell your practitioner as soon as possible so that is an alternative treatment can be found.

Yes but not longterm: Ativan, (lorazepam) a benzodiazepine, can help with anxiety related behaviors and thoughts.  However, it is not an ideal choice for long term use because one can develop tolerance for this group of drugs.  Behavioral therapy is foundational for you to be able to het better with or without meds.  Exercise can also be very helpful.  Med choice may include an ssri.

Ativan (lorazepam) : Ativan, (lorazepam) a sedative benzodiazepine, could reduce the respiratory rate, particularly if in combination with opiates, alcohol, other sedatives, and in cases of respiratory disease like copd, breathing related sleep disorders like sleep apnea. At at a dose of 1 mg twice a day, it is unusual to cause strong effects but it could if other circumstances are present.

i have some gastric upset due to my anxiety and i was wondering if ativan (lorazepam) will cause gastric upset or make me feel sick?

Can not tell you IF: You will develop gastric upset with ativan (lorazepam). However, there is potential for abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting.  One option for GI upset is ginger. You can drink slightly flattened ginger ale or nibble on crystallized ginger. Or pour boiling water over freshly sliced organic ginger ; steep x 5 min in a covered pot. Sip.

can dilaudid and ativan (lorazepam) combo cause dillusions and breaking in and out of reality? my husband takes it. i am looking for answers to odd behavior.

Definitely: This is very strong medicine. Why is he taking this combo?
Is he also taking alcohol? It should be governed by a doctor and not just taking it. He needs medical care as soon as it can be arranged Maybe even tonight at the ER. If he is delusional he needs help now!

i was on 0.5-1.0 mg ativan for 15 days. upon stopping i unexpectedly experienced physical withdrawal. most of the withdrawal symptoms have subsided except for cognitive difficulties. is it possible that i caused perm damage through excitoxicity?

NO: No there is no permanent damage. Just try to live a healthy lifestyle and get good rest, eating, hydration, exercise and mindfulness. The dose was low and short time period. You are just worried.

Absolutely : Extremely common in elderly that are very sensitive to benzodiazepines, also higher risk when used along other pain meds, muscle relaxants, alcohol, etc.
