i had my mirena (levonorgestrel) inserted weeks ago. starting 4 days ago i've had a brown metal smelling discharge. no pain/fever. what could this be? will it go away?

Spotting: Break through bleeding or spotting are common on the mirena, (levonorgestrel) it can make some patient's cycles very light. Usually this gets lighter or goes away after the first month or so.

Mirena IUD ?s: Brown discharge with any IUD can occur if the IUD has been shifted in position by uterine contractions, causing slight bleeding, which does have a "metallic odor". See the gyn who installed the IUD for a pelvic ultrasound  to determine the position of the IUD.

You : You can wait to see your doctor, but in the meantime definitely use condoms for protection from pregnancy.  Your doctor can perform a pelvic exam and possibly an ultrasound to be sure your Mirena (levonorgestrel) is still in place.  You are right, the Mirena (levonorgestrel) can be expelled, and though this is rare it can definitely happen.
