See your doc: Small amounts of blood-tinged mucus can mean a bacterial infection. See your doc and get evaluated. More than a tbsp of blood is more worrying and, of course, if there is a lot more than that you should head to the Emergency Room.  If you have shortness of breath, constant chest pain, (not just when you cough), or fever over 101 F, you need to go to the ER in that case, too.  Hope you feel better!

Cough, can't swallow: When in doubt see your doctor. If you are concerned, or your symptoms are not improving or you are feeling worse, then it's best to see your doctor.

i've had the flu and a bad cough for a few days. today when i cough up phlem there is a small amout of blood. what would l have irritated?

Probably not serious: Are you otherwise healthy? Was the blood pink or dark in colour? Are you better from the flu in every other way? 
The blood could come from the oropharynx or the lung. 
If you are unwell or if the symptoms persist you should see a doctor to evaluate you in detail.

Be seen: If he continues to have bloody sputum, he needs to see a pulmonologist.  Cancer or tuberculosis are certainly in consideration if he continues to cough up blood.

: Extreme coughing can sometimes cause a small amount of blood to appear, and it's not serious. If there continues to be blood in the sputum after mild cough, or if it happens again, you may need additional evaluation. Causes of blood in the sputum include acute bronchitis, tuberculosis, tumors in the airways.
