Can't predict: Chronic heavy alcohol intake puts you at risk for cirrhosis. But there is no magic number as to when it will cause cirrhosis.

See answer: Fatty liver or hepatic steatosis is not uncommon, and occurs often in people who may be overweight.  It can be reversed by losing weight and watching your diet with decreased fats.  Rarely will this turn into cirrhosis, but you certainly do not want to drink alcohol all the time and/or take medications that go through the liver (like tylenol) often.  Have lft's monitored with a dr.  Best wishes.

Stage 4=cirrhosis: The prognosis of cirrhosis is highly variable since it is influenced by a number of factors, including etiology, severity, presence of complications, and comorbid diseases.  Scoring systems are available to give you an idea of life expectancy but are far from exact.  You should discuss this with your doctor.

Anger unhelpful: Cirrhosis from hep c is one of the most common causes for liver transplantation in the U.S.  Very bad disease.  Hope you are getting treated.  Means of acquisition of hep c not always very clear.  Some from blood transfusions years ago, IV drug use w needle sharing, but sexual transmission not entirely clear since many couples have only one partner positive after years of  cohabitation.

Very serious: This is so serious that you would do well to have ie read by.a second pathologist. You also need to determine the cause of the cirrhosis. Usually it is partly reversible if you find and can treat the cause.

: It does sound as desperate measures, suggesting liver failure. Talk to the docs involved regarding goals of care at this point as functional recovery becomes less and less likely. Palliative care may be needed and the inpatient team may help in timely and efficient communication between family and the medical team.

: Such high enzyme levels indicate rather severe liver damage, such as acute hepatitis. Whether there is risk of permanent damage and ultimate cirrhosis depends on the cause, how long the problem has been present, and other factors. For example, potentially very different outcomes between viral hepatitis, alcohol, drug toxicity (like acetaminophen overdose), autoimmune, etc. Discuss w/ your doctor.

Abnormal: They would be abnormal. Other tests would be done as well such as ultrasound and liver biopsy.

Accepted Answer

Good: If a patient with cirrhosis develops cellulitis and it is treated appropriately (with antibiotics), then there should be no problems.  However, patients with cirrhosis are at greater risk of complications from infections and should not delay in getting treated.

Several: Cirrhosis can be mild, moderate or severe, and in severe cases can produce serious illness, including GI bleeding, accumulation of toxic substances not cleared by the liver, and infection, as well as an inability to properly metabolize drugs and even substances found in food.  Anemia causes fatigue, shortness of breath and weakness. Hep b/c should be treated, alcohol avoided:there may be treatment.
