my doctor ordered a cmp, how long do i need to fast for?

12 hours: The cmp is a 'complete metabolic panel' which includes a blood glucose level. 12 hours of fasting is usually sufficient to get an accurate baseline glucose. This is used to diagnosis diabetes of other Insulin related diseases.

Yes: Food intake will raise serum alkaline phosphatase as it is one of the enzymes in the intestine. Cmp has other components that require that you be fasting. Please fast for 9-12 hours before the test.

non diabetic, but last 3 non-fasting glucose were 74, 81, 77 in 2 months.all other enzymes and cmp blood normal except ldl 143. hdl 64 & trigl 96. usually fast glucose is around 95 (twice in jan) should i be concerned, liver problem?

: Check with when your took your meds for DM and see it they would be peaking at about this time.

: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, other than mildly elevated LDL your results are normal and not an indication of liver disease.     Wish you good health!

More tests needed: Hello, these type of symptoms could be related to an over active thyroid (hyperthyroidism) or can also be seen in women approaching menopause. Both of these can easily be checked with blood tests ( thyroid-TSH/FT4, menopause transition-FSH). Adrenal disorders can also cause similar symptoms but are less likely. More information would be helpful to direct a work up.

Lab shorthand: Cmp-comprehensive medical profile.  This usually includes electrolytes, sodium, potassium, choloride, bun, glucose, etc...........

which elements on a standard cmp or other test could suggest dehydration?

Multiple: On a CMP, a high BUN-to-creatinine ratio MAY be suggestive of dehydration. On a review of urine electrolytes, a low urine chloride or a low FENa may also suggest this. But the operative word is SUGGEST, as there are many causes of a high BUN:Cr and low FENa. To actually put context to these labs, it is always advisable to seek your physician to interpret them properly and apply them to your case.

Encephalopathy: Encephalopathy can occur from several other causes. It is unlikely to have hepatic encephalopathy with normal liver function tests.

Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, random glucose of 92 is not suggestive of even pre-diabetes, let alone diabetes.
Wish you good health! - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex.

my bun was 11 in january. now it dropped to 5 which is low. what can cause 1) low bun 2) such a drastic drop in 10 months? please tell all possible causes. i will ask my dr but other opinions are helpful. all other results from the cmp were normal?

: Causes of a low BUN include a diet poor in protein,malnutrition,drinking too much water and severe liver damage. In your case I wouldn't put any significance on it as I doubt that any of these factors are present.
