No. : No. Ticks remain on the surface of the skin but they insert a special tube like feeding device, called a hypostome, to nourish themselves on your blood.  They keep the blood from clotting by excreting an anticoagulant.

The bump you feel is not a tick's body, but could be an inflammatory reaction from an insect bite.

Exam: Ticks generally burrow part way into the skin, bite and than draw blood and finally drop off. Sometimes the tick is accidentally pulled apart and the head remains in the skin. There are many types of ticks in the Michigan region including  American dog tick, Blacklegged tick,   Lone star tick, Brown dog tick &amp; Woodchuck tick. To be on the safe side I suggest you go to a medical clinic for an exam.

Lyme disease: It is most likely that he has local irritation or residual tick particles causing pain.  Lyme disease usually presents days to weeks after a tick bite many forms such as bright red rash, weakness, joint pain, fever or headaches.

Best you see your doctor for and examination and probable removal.  This is why it is always best to coax a tick into releasing its bite, instead of decapitating it by pulling it off.

See below: This is a hard to answer but great question.  Depending on how big the tick is will help determine the difficulty of whether the whole tick and head is removed.  The smaller the tick the harder it is to tell without a really good magnifying glass.  If a dark spot is left after removing the tick, part of the head may still be there, but his might be blood too.  Best advise - watch for rash at site.

Yes: Some can cause rocky mountain spotted fever or lyme  disease or other diseases.  Remove ticks as soon as you discover one on you and put it in a container to bring with you to the doctor if you get a bull eye rash or any other symptoms. They will be able to send it to the state lab or cdc to determine if it was infected.
