how often are vocal chords hurt when removing a thyroid nodule?

Depends: The biggest risk is from damage to the recurrent laryngeal nerve, which runs under the thyroid and controls the vocal cords. It depends on the patient's risk factors and the skill of the surgeon.  However, despite that it can still occur as a transient injury in up to 5-8% of thyroid surgeries.  It can also be permanent in up to 0.3-3% of thyroid surgeries. Being intubated can also contribute.

have 6 monitored thyroid nodules. last 2 days felt uncomfortable, bit pain front left neck.  when touched, feels bit lumpy. gland or thyroid problem?

No one can tell: It's often hard to make that distinction when the patient is present before the doctor. It's impossible to do that by description alone.

i have hypervascular thyroid nodule 9x8mm on my right lobe. the past 3 days i noticed on my right the gland is swollen i see it in the mirror bigger than usual and when i touch it i feel it. what could be the cause of this?

Accepted Answer

: Hyper vascular nodules occasionally outgrow their blood supply and bleed into themselves, casing an increase in size. This is not very likely, however, given the small size of this nodule.

can benign thyroid nodules that haven't caused pain in the past, become a painful ache and hurt when swallowing now? i have several of various sizes.

Accepted Answer

Yes: If thyroid nodules get bigger in size, they can compress the tissues around them including the esophagus and the windpipe. This can result in difficulty swallowing or breathing if they get large enough. If you are experiencing these symptoms you should be evaluated by a physician.

soft nodule on back of neck, if touched, i experience  vertigo. lump is directly behind thyroid nodule on front of neck. are they connected issues?

Unlikely: A thyroid nodule should not cause vertigo.  Vertigo is usually an inner ear inflammation.  I wonder, and i admit this is a leap of faith, if the soft nodule you are are compressing could be the external carotid artery.  Does the lump pulsate in rhythm with your pulse?  However, the carotid artery is close to the thyroid.  If the nodule is directly behind the thyroid, that is not the back of neck.

11 days after fna on 6mm thyroid nodule bruise gone but hard bump under fna site and stings when touched. had some tingling up my neck also ear pain. nodule was ptc and im concerned about seeding. also swollen ociptal node and shoulder pain.no fever?

: I am quite surprised that you had the biopsy done for that tiny nodule and PTC was diagnosed. The seeding and its symptoms can not be that fast but metastatic lesions before the biopsy can not be ruled out. You will need further imaging tests for ruling out metastases before the definite treatment of PTC.

what should i look for if something did go wrong
my throat is sore
my ears hurt real bad here and there when i move to get up

You : You should have no serious problems from fine needle aspiration biopsy but if you have continued pain or swelling call the doctor who performed the biopsies. You might be achy for about a day. You can feel pain in the ear because of how your nerves work even though it was your thyroid and your ear was not biopsied. This is called referred pain. Sometimes people will tense their neck muscles because of pain elsewhere in the neck. I hope you feel better today and the biopsies are all negative (no cancer).

Yes: Thyroid nodules occur in up to 50% of the worlds population. Modern ultrasound equipment can detect very small nodules that were not detectable with older machines. Only about 5% of nodules are cancerous. Nodules tend to increase in frequency as one matures.

Accepted Answer

Yes.: Most thyroid nodules remain stable over many years.  Some can increase in size and some can decrease.  It depends on the composition of the nodule.
