what is the best over-the-counter meds or way to cleanse your system? want to cleanse my system because have never done it other than a laxative.

Not necessary: Intestinal tract normally cleans itself. Many people require laxatives or stool softners if bowels can not be regulated by diet alone. Various so called spa treatments, bowel "cleansing treatments" & high colonics etc. Vary from unnecessary to somewhat fraudulent. They only truly benefit those receiving payment. Don't ask the provider about benefits, they are biased & have mortgage payments.

Laxative: Typically lasts only 24 hours. You can take them daily as needed but don't get dependent upon them. There are better alternatives for daily bowel movements.

is the amount of sorbitol in gum enough to have a laxative effect, particularly if it's listed as the first ingredient? if so, generally how long does it take for the sorbitol to work its way through a person's system and the effect to lessen?

: Since there's only 1.25 grams of sorbitol in a piece of gum, I would think that it would take at least a few pieces daily to cause diarrhea. 
It's stated that a.minimum of 5 grams of sorbitol to cause diarrhea. It's poorly absorbed by the intestinal tract and its effects should be gone after a day or so.

i'm bulimic and have been purging and taking laxatives. i haven't had my depakote er 750 mg for two days. should it all be out of my system now?

Bulimia: I feel your distress.
Purging and taking laxatives can affect your gastro-intestinal system.
Depakote is for seizure disorders, manic episodes and for prevention of Migraine
Its side effects can be— abdominal pain, Hyponatremia, loss/increased appetite, weight loss/gain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation

daughter has anorexia, is now on eating plan. we expected her digestive system to take a while to cope, but its been more than 6 months. a gastroenterologist gave series of laxatives, seemed to work but still severe pain, nausea, reflux. what next?

Diet change: I would suggest trying a casein(milk protein)&amp; gluten(wheat protein) free diet. James Greenblatt has written about individuals with eating disorders missing the enzyme DPPIV-that digest those two proteins

Your choice: the tea has herbal additives that stimulate peristalsis. it is not bad tasting so try it and see what you like.

Metamucil: Metamucil in my opinion.It is natural, contains fiber, can be taken daily, also help bring your cholesterol level down.

Yes: Laxatives can affect the absorption of some medications.  Warfarin, antibiotics, and heart medications  can  be affected by laxatives.

See a GI DR for a: Colonoscopy to check for pathology -? Polyps .Your narcotic medications may contribute to your constipation. Consider to stop or cut down. Take  care!

will a colon cleanse laxative get rid of any pinworms?

Accepted Answer

Some: By virtue of the fact that a colon cleanse "washes" out the colon, some pinworms in the colon lumen will be washed out.  But worms can adhere to and invade the colon wall, so this is not adequate treatment.  You need an anti-helminthic drug (active against worms) to cure this infection.
