A member asked:

Is the amount of sorbitol in gum enough to have a laxative effect, particularly if it's listed as the first ingredient? if so, generally how long does it take for the sorbitol to work its way through a person's system and the effect to lessen?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Since there's only 1.25 grams of sorbitol in a piece of gum, I would think that it would take at least a few pieces daily to cause diarrhea. It's stated that a.minimum of 5 grams of sorbitol to cause diarrhea. It's poorly absorbed by the intestinal tract and its effects should be gone after a day or so.
