Accepted Answer

Not an issue for: Self diagnosis or treatment. Vast majority of CMV infections are sub-clinial or cause a self-limited flu like illness. If you have more than that, you need to seek care from your doctor.

i had a bad viral infection which caused my wbc and platelet level to decrease (wbc 2.5 and platelets 112). a few days later they repeated the blood test and wbc normalized but platelets still low (120). will the platelets eventually go back up?

: It is very likely that your platelets will be back to normal within the next few weeks. I would advise you to follow up with your doctor one more time to assess.

how long does it take platelets to return to normal after a infection? i was tested in jan. it was 420k platelets. doc is retesting my labs in april. im hoping its normal?

: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, if you platelet count was normal before the infection and the infection has resolved you should see a normal result, not that 420 is too abnormal.    Wish you good health!

Maybe.: That may be true.  Depends on a lot of things, inc. the cause of infection. Often platelet counts might have been low before an infection, but were not tested recently and so the finding may not be due to the infection at all.  There are also other causes of low platelets.  Ask your doc what the plan is to follow up on these.  Repeating the test to follow it after a week or two is reasonable.

: The sinus infection or any other infections because of the inflammatory process could cause elevated platelets; so could other situations of inflammation even when there is no infection because of chemicals produced during the process in the body. Elevated platelets could also be due to other things like dysfunction in response to chemical control in the body.

Critically high?: Ask your physician to double-check you for mild iron deficiency, which often raises the platelets high before it causes anemia. If this is not the cause, and you seem otherwise healthy, the question will be whether to check for your essential thrombocythemia's genetic change or simply watch you. High platelets alone seldom present much danger.

i am 57 year old female , 2016 platelet was 152 , 2019 went down to 111 , just got my labs back 3-10-2021 platelet is 124 , not sure whats going on is 124 mean something serious is going on ? i do suffer with sinus infections and sinus problems ?

: Nothing serious. I would look at these labs as within common variations of normal patients. All labs should be interpreted by the doc who ordered them who knows the patient.

child has had 2 cbcs months apart showing high hgb (13.9, 13.8) and hct (41%, 43.2%). platelets also high but most likely due to viral infection both times. should i be concerned about hgb and hct levels in my 4 year old. everything else within range?

Mgt: During an infection, platelet counts may increase. If the count is extremely high a CBC, differential can determine if other cell lines are affected.
