Depends: It all depends on the kind of tear and the thickness of the damaged tendons and ligaments and this must be determined in person after reviewing the films and with an in person examination.

More strengthening: Exercises for the involved leg especially the quadecepes an, hamstring  and the calf muscles.

Calf pain : If doppler is negative for dvt, then consider soleus strain, referred ls spine nerve pain, localized swelling/edema, hematoma, etc.

Accepted Answer

Not usually: Bracing after meniscus resection is not used. Bracing after meniscus repair is usually used for 4-6 weeks post operatively to limit flexion to 90 degrees while meniscus heals.  After meniscus heals (about 6months), a functional brace for sports is not used.

Some: A serious knee brace helps people with an unstable knee prevent further knee damage until surgery is done.  For just the meniscus tear, some people are more comfortable in a brace, but it's not "helping" the problem. That being said, it's not hurting either. Some of my patients like them, but i would not recommend paying a lot unless your knee has torn ligaments, .

If you are: Having pain as a result of wearing your knee brace, contact your orthopedic surgeon or physical therapist and request a different one.

if i decide to have surgery on my meniscus will i be in an immobilizer brace? how long until i can drive if it's on my right knee?

That depends on your: Orthopod, who'll base his decision on the operative findings ; what he had to do for it.
Check with him re: driving. I don't allow my patients to drive for 6 weeks or till the strength in knee muscles is optimum.

Hinged brace + PT: The best braces to decrease the chances of having instability episodes are hinged knee braces. Even with these braces, however, you may still experience instability. Your best bet to decrease these episodes is to begin a focused exercise protocol to strengthen your quadriceps, hamstrings, and hip abductor &amp; adductor muscles. I often prescribe physical therapy for these injuries.

what's after a full leg brace? i had vascular surgery and my meniscus is still ripped. what comes after this? will i walk with a torn meniscus?

Accepted Answer

Varies: It varies in part on the reason for the brace.  A brace is not a standard treatment for your meniscal tear, so you may be wearing the brace for other reasons.  Typical treatment for most meniscal tears is arthroscopic repair verses debridement, but you might not be a candidate for this based upon a recent vascular surgery.  I would certainly discuss specifics of your case with your surgeons.
