No: Smoking is an accumulated problem. One cigarette is like having one drink. It doesn't make you an alcoholic.

how do you get lung cancer? if you don't smoke? myparents smoked, but i always hated the way the stuff smelled. when i got older, i made them go outside to smoke, and i haven't been around smokers in years. sohow could i have lung cancer?

While : While smoking is the major modifiable risk factor leading to lung cancer, not all lung cancer is related to smoking.  Other risk factors include second hand smoke, asbestos, and organic solvents.  There are potential dietary (vitamin a, vitamin e, beta carotene) and genetic risk factors (?Cystic fibrosis), as well as the presence of emphysema and pulmonary fibrosis that could predispose to the development of lung cancer.
Second hand smoke could be relevant here.  I would recommend further testing.

Exceedingly unlikely: What you considered a cold may have been a deeper infection (lower rather than upper respiratory virus) and in such cases recovery can take longer.If you haven't been in to see your doc in a while it might be easier to just go in and be evaluated than worry and wait to see if another week or so will fix it.

Back and chest pain: Honestly there are many things that you could have including cancer or heart problems .  But i would first recommend that you see your primary care physician as soon as possible for evaluation.

Probably not serious: Congratulations for stopping smoking:  hang in there! Cancer is exceedingly rare at your age of 17, regardless of smoking history. Bronchitis and minor irritation of the airways can cause slight bleeding -- probably not serious unless it recurs or lots of blood. To be completely safe, see your doctor. But don't lose a lot of sleep in the meantime; probably this isn't serious.

Dr. can check throat: Lung cancer is unlikely (yet possible) at age 30. Never smoke anything other than salmon, brisket, etc. Throat symptoms can be from strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or other virus (antibiotics usually not used), allergies or irritants, sinusitis, stomach reflux when asleep, etc... One usually sees the doctor if the throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly.

Not rare: 10-15% of lung cancers occur in non-smokers.  16-24, 000 americans die of lung cancer each year are  "never smoked" patients. If you just took the "never smoked" group of lung cancer deaths, completely separate from the “smokers”, the "never smoked" lung cancer disease would rank among the top 10 fatal cancers in the United States.

Slim: Lung cancer can happen in non-smokers, but it would be exceedingly rare in a young, never smoker young lady. That said, it not impossible so if you have any persistent respiratory problems, please visit your doctor.  Best to you and please never smoke.

Yes to both answers: It takes 20 plus years after you stop smoking for your risk factor from smoking to decrease to the level of the general population. You can get lung cancer is you never smoked but that si quite rare.
