I don't think anyone: really knows for sure regarding dietary guidelines for people with colonic infections.  Common sense says "binding foods" which include bananas and grains/oats can only sustain you so far, before the lack of animal proteins and fats kicks in.  While that is in and of itself not a bad thing in relation to weight loss, you should consider increasing your diet back to normal within 2 weeks.

Holistic hoax: Anecdotal study based on African tribes who had a high fiber diet and were w/o diverticular disease. There have been no scientific double blind long term studies.
Since you now have diverticular disease suggest a low residue diet.  Consult a gastroenterologist for help in management

Diverticulosis: If you have pain, then the problem is not diverticulosis. Diverticulosis by itself can cause painless bleeding, but not other symptoms. When diverticuli become inflammed and infected with bacteria, you have "diverticulitis, " and this is a painful condition, usually on the left, lower side, with low-grade fever. This condition needs antibiotics. You need an md evaluation.

Diverticular dz: Extensive diverticulosis is one of the indications for total colectomy there did you get repeated infections, were you symptomatic with pain, fever , bleeding in stools etc. Removing the colon will still allows you to lead a normal life though initially you will need low residue diet, that means avoiding bulk forming food so that you,initially you have some loose stools but slowly will be adjusted

Eat well...: It's never too late to start eating well. At 45 with a history of diverticulitis, i'd recommend a broad diet with adequate fibre, and try to lower your fat content. It wouldn't hurt to add a cheap bulk laxative. You don't need to avoid seeds or salads, though I do suggest you limit your intake of nuts and popcorn - not an absolute moratorium, just not a daily diet. Good luck.
