i have diverticulitis and am currently on a low residue diet. is coconut milk ok?

Yes: If you have diverticulitis, with pain and fever stay on a low fiber diet for 4-6 weeks to allow healing. If you merely have diverticulosis, then a high fiber diet is recommended and include 80-100 ounces of non cafeinated, non alcoholic fluid per day and this can include coconut milk.

i had my gall bladder removed and then had diverticulitis. i have had diarrhea since the removal was told to change diet. what should i be eating?

Diet: Eat a low fat diet and start probiotics. Diarrhea is common after gall bladder removal but the diverticulitis has disturbed your bacterial flora.  You'll get better soon.

what is the safest way to treat constipation while following a low residue diet for 6 weeks post-diverticulitis? already drinking 80oz of water, and eating less than 6g of fiber/1300cal, daily?

Accepted Answer

: If you have little or no urge for BMs, try taking a gentle bowel stimulant like senokotS daily according to the instructions. Avoid laxatives if possible. Ask your physician, surgeon or gastroenterologist if you can take metamucil daily to provide fiber without stirring up diverticulitis. Regular exercise can help.

3rd time getting diverticulitis in 6 months. this time every time i start eating solid food from a liquid diet i get abdominal pain after 2 days. what could be the cause. eating a very low residue bland diet of about 4 different things?

Accepted Answer

: You may still have some residual inflammation from the diverticulitis. If this persists, you should see your GI doctor to see what else can be done to relieve the inflammation so you can eat more solid food as well as a larger variety of foods. You may need to see a dietician to provide you information on a diet you will likely tolerate. Good luck!

diverticulitis flare started last monday. no antibiotics, liquid diet 3 days. pain went away. started eating low residue diet sun night, tues night pain returned. should i be on antibiotics at this point? no fever only abdominal pain?

: If you have significant associated tenderness and/or fever, I would recommend systemic antibiotic treatment which may be given orally or intravenously. I also would return to a full liquid diet. Don't hesitate to consult an abdominal surgeon if symptoms worsen.

Early vs. Late: Acute diverticulitis is associated with swelling of the colon that may create a temporary partial blockage of the colon. Therefore, we often advocate no food or just liquids during the initial phase of treatment. When food is resumed, it is common to recommend a low-residue diet early on.  After the inflammation resolves, we often recommend high-fiber diets, which may reduce the risk of recurrence.

Yes: Some current GI folks do not buy into the seeds restriction.
I general avoid most watermelon seeds - fun to spit at a tree!

Low residue diet: Low residue diet which is the opposite  of high fiber for 10 to 14 days.

Depends: Diverticulosis: hi fiber diet and and plenty of fluids. Include fruits, vegetables, salads and whole grains.
Diverticulitis: low fiber diet, no fruits vegetables, salads or whole grains and plenty of fluids. Until inflammatory/infection completely resolves approx 6 weeks.
