Drug safety: Physicians and dentist who can go over your complete medical history and actually examine you are the best ones to answer this question. Safety is relative and everyone should try to limit unnecessary medications. Doctors can evaluate and help decide what is proper and safe for you. Doctors over the internet cannot do this and can only make generalizations that may not apply to you!

Fun, then more fun: Most viral illnesses start with a brief prodrome, where nothing happens, then some mild fatigue, runny nose, mild abdominal pain, etc. A little post nasal drip, slight cough. As the virus causes destruction of the mucous membrane, cough worsens, mucous worsens and thickens, and fever may begin. As the immune system gets on top of the virus, symptoms resolve over a period of time.

Listerine: Vitamin C is indeed helpful at doses of 1000-2000 mg daily.  A study done 20 yrs ago also showed that Listerine gargles every 4 hours for the first 3 days of a cold sh0ortened a cold by 1.5 days.  None of the other mouthwashes nor salt water gargles had any effect.

No cure for URI: I am not aware of anything in ice cream that would "cure" a common cold. That is a rhinovirus infection or other viral infection that typically needs to run its course in 5-7 days. That is one problem we still have no cure for at this time. There are many supportive therapies that make us feel better, but doesn't  "cure" it.

Zinc it up: Yes, if you take zinc tablets/lozenges within the 1st day of cold symptoms, you can cut down how bad and how long you have a cold. Most common side effects:  not everyone likes the taste and some folks may feel sick in their stomach. Don't use the zinc nose spray. That can cause permanent loss of smell. Feel better. ::passes you the chicken soup & kleenex::.

Cetrizine is OTC: Your medication is available over the counter. If you cannot afford that and your insurance is willing to cover it at a lower price, you can call your doctor and the office staff can call it directly into the pharmacy for you. It has no abuse potential, so they should not see you in any way as "drug-seeking.".

hi doc. i am 6 weeks pregnant and i have an issue drinking milk due to accumulating mucus in my throat that can cause of common colds, what is the safe drink for me instead of fresh milk or any brand of milk? thanks?

: For nutritional supplements added to pre-natal vitamins to avoid "fresh milk" , see your OB physician for guidance, who will be your source of information during the balance of your pregnancy.
