I am sure many nutritionists support it but am quite certain that many find it lacking. The usda food pyramid is ultimately a political document designed by committee influenced by special interests. Governement plate: I prefer the new government plate which is 1/4 plate as protein, 1/4 plate as complex carbs, 1/4 as fruit and 1/4 as vegetables.  You can also have 1/2 the plate as vegetables if you want. www.choosemyplate.gov.

Balanced meals: You can look at the recommnended food plate or the old food pyramid...Basically though eating a variety of foods and a variety of colors is helpful. According to one nutritionist i know, she recommends eating at every meal one carb and 2 proteins or 2 carbs and one protein. We should all have leafy greens, fruits (anything that grows from a flower) and protein- which can come from many sources.

Carbohydrates: First there is no longer a food pyramid.  The recommended daily calorie component chart is shaped like a diamond.

Carbohydrates are essential in a healthy diet. But, they should be a small part of the diet not the main component.  Science now teaches us that only about 25% of your calories should come from carbohydrates.
