Dilaudid: The side effects are varied and similar to other narcotics. If you have been prescribed these your physician and pharmacist should have gone over these with you. I hate to presume but please do not take this medication if not prescribed to you it is a powerful narcotic that could kill if taken incorrectly.

Similar: They are very similar (as are all opioids).  Obviously a transdermal product (fentanyl patch) is much easier to use than having to inject something iv.  In my experience the incidence of nausea, vomiting and constipation are better with the fentayl patch.  Dilaudid is available as both an immediate release oral product and an extended release product (exalgo).

Side effects??: They aren't really effects on the side, but what the drug does. Any opioid can cause physical dependency, and the main "side effect" of a Dilaudid (or heroin, or oxycodone) dependency is that if you don't have it, you go into withdrawal, which can be severe, with nausea/vomiting/diarrhea, muscle pain, anxiety, insomnia. Other effects of use are constipation edema, low testosterone and overdose.

Define short term: Do you mean 5-7 days or more? Assuming there's no other condition to complicate your discontinuation of the medication, it might be worthwhile restarting at a very low dose of Dilaudid and tapering it over about 3 days rather than abruptly stopping it. In acute pain syndromes for which opiates are indicated, withdrawal symptoms are pretty rare.

Withdrawals: With two opiate medications you are more likely to have withdrawals BUT it depends on how fast you are weaning off. Normally I would recommend reducing the dose by 25% per week. It will of course also depend on how much of each you are taking. If you are on equivalent of about 3 tables a day, there should be no withdrawal. Also, you are not on them for too long so chances of withdrawals are less.

You may: Going to nothing may cause some withdrawal, but it may be mild and tolerable, and within a week should mostly resolve. Expect fatigue, mild insomnia, loose bowel. Can take some immodium. Lots of fluids if having more symptoms or difficulty talk to your doctor.

See doctor: Why were you taking Dilaudid?  My take is that the Dilaudid had suppressed your cough but not cured the cause thus your current problem. Consult your doctor.

Withdrawal: It is unlikely that you would experience true physical withdrawal symptoms from waiting somewhat over 8 hours between MS Contin (morphine) doses.
