It is a draw: Oxycontin has a longer duration of effect and can last 8-12 hours. Dilaudid tends to have a much shorter effect lasting 3-4 hours. Oxycontin tends to be used for more even continuous pain control. Dilaudid is used for break through pain. Both are very strong medications with a high potential for addiction. Please use caution & strictly follow doctors instructions.

Pain meds: Hopefully you are doing this under your doctors supervision. That being said, continue to follow your doctors supervision to decrease your medications as we have no idea what you are being treated for or what dose of the medication you are on.

my husband is on a pain reg & 0 works. fentanyl, oxycontin, vic, perc, morphine, dilaudid.. by chance at an er doc gave him 1mg of ativan & he said he finally wasnt in pain! his pain doc refuses to give him ativan says due to addiction? help?

: There is a risk of addiction but the risk much lower than that for opiates. It may be prudent to see a different doctor for a second opinion.

See neurologist.: I recommend that you have to cut back on the Oxycontin and Dilaudid because they are not just addictive but eventually you need to use more to achieve the degree of pain control you have. The Cymbalta  and Lyrica (pregabalin) have been used a lot for chronic pain which is also experienced in pn. I would suggest that you consider other pain control besides the opiates for a long term basis through a pain clinic.

Like Everything Else: They buy it illegally or they get a doctor to write them a prescription. Some perfomers actually do have legitimate pain problems but the lifestyle sometimes leads to other complications and addictions. When you have $$$ $, you can always find those willing to oblige with whatever.

Any dose: You can get addicted or tolerant at any dose. It's not the dose of the drug, but how often you take it, your predisposition to it and length of time you're on it.
