low carb/low sugar diet for many years. very fit, active& not overweight. 2 consecutive morning blood tests showed mildly elevated fasting glucose (101 & 102), but non-fasted glucose is lower somehow & a1c is great (4.4%). concerning for prediabetes?

: This does not appear to be diabetes, especially given your hemoglobin A1C, which tells you your overall blood sugar control over the past 3 months. If you want to monitor this, you could have the hemoglobin A1C repeated in 3-4 months to see what the trend is. If you continue with your healthy lifestyle, this likely will not be a problem. is it okay to take medication for a headache while fasting for blood tests?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Few blood tests require fasting.  Those that do would not be affected by the use of tylenol (acetaminophen) or NSAID type pain relievers such as ibuprofen.

would change in diet/exercise affect possible blood tests at my endo appt? should i wait until after the appt to stray from my usual patterns?

Accepted Answer

Depends how far: I assume you're referring to an endocrine appointment.  Yes, some tests can be altered by diet and exercise.  However, since a good diet and exercise are so important, it'll be hard to justify waiting more than a day or so before starting your new regimen.  Check with your doctor to make sure they won't be testing again to see how you've responded to the exercise regimen, otherwise, I start today.

severe symptoms of hypoglycemia but all tests blood tests including fasting blood tests show that there's apparently nothing rong? wats rong with me?!

Accepted Answer

Not normal: You should seek a second opinion. Hypoglycemia is a disorder and must be fully investigate as it can be dangerous especially if you drive or operate machinery.

i received the results from my blood tests yesterday and it showed that i have an hb of 14, but a ferritin level of 8. could you possibly inform me as to what medication i can use? and also what i can do to my diet to improve this?

See below: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, low ferritin indicates low iron stores. You may take oral iron and multivitamins to replenish your iron stores.

how accurate are blood tests for b12 vitamin when not fasting?

Accepted Answer

Accurate: We pathologists are focused on labs. In testing for B12 deficiency, we're looking largely at the ability to absorb it, and perhaps at its absence in the diet (even modest vegetarians are prone to be low). A non-fasting serum B12 in the normal range would reassure me and i'd not ask for a repeat fasting.

my baby vomits regularly. he had blood tests to confirm what food he was allergic to. we have eliminated those foods from his diet, he still vomits.

See doctor: If he still vomits after having eliminated the test-positive foods, the cause may be from something else although one cannot be 100% sure that the blood tests might not have included some of the foods the child is allergic. Consult an allergist if needed.

Why fast for tests: Fasting blood tests are used to get an idea of what your lipid and glucose levels are. If your lipids are elevated on a fasting blood sample, you need dietary, k exercise and/or drug therapy to control their levels. If you fasting glucose is normal, that does not rule out diabetes. Another test called a hemoglobin a1c will give you a better idea of your have diabetes if it's elevated.

No: There are separate tests for each of the sexually transmitted infections. There is no well defined panel of "regular" blood tests. 
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex. 
Get HPV vaccine.

No supplements: No supplements are needed nor would do you any good.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex.
