A nasty Staph : Mrsa stands for methicillin resistant stapholoccuc aureus, and is a staph that is resistant to many usual antibiotics (and each one has different antibiotics that will kill it). It often causes more aggressive infections and often spreads through the family.It should be treated, after culture, with the specific andtibiotics shown to work in the lab. Others in the family should be looked at.

Possibly: Most humans are colonized with Staphylococcus aureus. MRSA is just one strain of this organism. It is possible to rid yourself of the carrier state, but it will take time and effort, using a combination of mupirocin ointment in the nares and continued washing of skin with soap containing chlorhexidine which produces a thin layer on the skin. Rectal colonization is more difficult to eradicate.

No but they need Rx: Mrsa is a resistant staph infection.  It should be treated with antibiotics.   Typically MRSA is more difficult to treat that a regular staph infection.

Clot: This may be a Blood clot(hematoma) under the skin formed when some blood congealed. Warm applications may help dissolve it. See your Physician if the lump enlarges,turns reddened or becomes painful and tender.

MRSA  Transmission: Mrsa occurs through direct contact with:
someone who has an active infection
someone who is a carrier of the infection (colonized)
a contaminated object.
After a person comes into contact with a contaminated surface or object, he or she may become a carrier of the bacteria (colonized). An active infection with MRSA can develop when a person is colonized and has an open cut.

Strep lives there: Streptococcus bacteria normally live in the nose; unfortunately you have a resistant strain of strep.  There are specialized antibiotics (pills or nasal cream) that can help resolve it.  To help prevent the spread of it to others, just practice common sense hygiene (wash hands, sneeze into your sleeve instead of your hands, etc).  You may want to avoid people with weakened immunity until it clears.

Among others...: Make sure they are getting culture and sensitivity done on the bacteria your father is infected with to make sure they stand the best chance of picking an effective regimen of antibiotics.  Ask about adverse reactions to the antibiotics he is taking, as doctors often have to use more toxic regimens with medication-resistant bacteria.

MRSA: MRSA is a bacterial infection resistent to penicillin and many other antibiotics.  It is usually seen in hospitalized or other patients such as nursing home and dialysis patients.  Another type (community associated MRSA) has occurred among healthy people and is spread by skin to skin contact.  Drainage of the infection and use of Antibiotics specific for MRSA such as Vancomycin is the treatment.
