what tests are done to diagnose kidney stones?

Kidney stones: can be seen and measured on a plain abdominal x-ray, kidney ultrasound, or abdominal CT scan. The most accurate measurements come from CT scan. When a kidney stone is small, it can be passed naturally (although usually painfully). When the stone is large, it may need to be broken up with ultrasound (lithotripsy) or retrieved by a urologist through the urethra.

Drink: How do you know it is a stone, I assume you had an Xray.  Someone should have told you to hydrate to the maximum.  In the hospital we flood you with IV fluids- but you can accomplish the same at home with forced drinking.  If stones don't pass they may need surgery.  Watch for signs of infection like fevers!  Take any available pain medicine.  Your period doesn't matter. Hope you feel better soon.

You need to: see a doctor, because your symptoms could be something else even more serious.  Kidney stones, depending on location, cause severe pain in flank or groin, usually not in hip or buttocks.  It also typically causes microhematuria, not visible to the eye.

Enjoy: Enjoy eating a sensible diet based on what you like and drink plenty of water, unless your physician has very strictly ordered you to monitor your diet. You'll simply trouble yourself trying to keep a "low oxalate" diet and the real key is hydration. i was recently diagnosed with kidney stones. the pain was on my right side only, now it has moved to my left side only. is that normal?

Kidney stones.: That depends...do you have kidney stones in both kidneys?  If you do, then it wouldn't be unreasonable  to have renal colic-type pains on either side. But, you should make sure and not just assume that these are kidney stone-related pains.

a friend was initially diagnosed with kidney stones but it is now being suggested that its an internal tear. what tests would determine this?

Imaging: I'm not sure what you mean by an "internal tear."  the best way to diagose a kidney stone is either with ultrasound or a ct scan.  An ultrasound will not identify ureteral stones. , so in some circumstances a ct scan is a better test.  Your friends physician will have determined which test to obtain.

Drink plenty fluids: if the stone is sitting there and was found by accident, the most you can do for yourself is to drink a lot of fluids per day, at least 2 liters.
if you passed a stone, you should retrieve the stone and take it in to your doctor so they can do a stone analysis. that will guide specific therapy if it is available, and it is good practice to drink a lot of fluids to prevent a recurrence.

have a friend who was diagnosed with kidney stone 8 days ago and still hasnt passed it. how/when should he go back to the doc?

Kidney stone.: Kidney stones up to 5mm in size will predictably pass on their own.  Your friend should drink plenty of water to produce a lot of urine, dilate those ureters and allow the stone to pass.  It may hurt while it's on its way out, but it'll pass.  Bigger stones will likely get stuck and will cause tremendous pain and will have to be removed by lithotripsy or cystoscopy.

my 6 year old has been diagnosed w/ kidney stones, we go in monday for more tests. now she has a 102.4 temp. is this the kidney stones?

Stones: Possibly but not likely.  If the fever is indeed due to a urinary tract infection, i would be more concerned about possible vesico-ureteral reflux ( a congenital condition).  Either way, you should definitely follow up for further testing.
