what is the meaning of diabetic seizure?

Hypoglycemic seizure: The most common type of seizure that a diabetic can have is one set off by a low blood sugar, usually below 40 mg/dl.  A diabetic is usually somewhat aware of events and people around them while they are experiencing a seizure and may be able to ask for help.  In an epileptic seizure there is usually no awareness of events during the convulsion.  Diabetic seizures range from mild to severe.

What?!: I have not heard of such a phrase Diabetes can cause a seizure during hypoglycemia,diabetic coma or related to a stroke but then it is not called by that name Seizure is a symptom and not a diagnosis related to many different causes

Accepted Answer

Yes: In my experience as a pediatrician, diabetics-hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) both can seizure, coma, and even death. Head trauma, illness and fever are other causes of seizures.

Hypoglycemic seizure: It is not the seizure that is responsible for any problems, it is the hypoglycemia.  If seizures are an issue speak to the doctor who is managing your diabetes to see if a change in medication or diet is necessary.

Hopefully...: ...you recover. Most people do. First thing to do is recognize &amp; treat hypoglycemia (NOT by mouth; give glucagon or IV glucose). People can get injured from "diabetic seizure" (really, a hypoglycemic seizure) in a number of ways. Make sure the person is not injured. Recovery from the hypoglycemia will stop the seizure automatically. Avoidance of severe hypoglycemia is, of course, very important!

Underlying disorder : Seizures related to diabetic hypoglycemia can also indicate an underlying seizure disorder. Those of my patients on anti seizure medication typically have epilepsy. Their seizure threshold is lowered by hypoglycemia. When seizure disorder is diagnosed in a patient with diabetes often they have seizures when glucoses aren't even terribly low. Best to prevent hypoglycemia.

Yes: Diabetes insipidus leads to hypernatremia which can cause neurologic symptoms.  Usually increased thirst and increased urination but it can cause seizures.

do you think my apparent diabetic symptoms could be the reason for my remaining uncontrolled seizures and migraines?

Accepted Answer

Yes: If your blood sugar is swinging from high to low, you could have seizures and headaches. The seizures from low blood sugar and the headaches are either post-ictal(after the seizure) or high blood sugar pulling water out of your brain. You shouldn't be diagnosing this on your own. Find out about your diabetes control and get the seizures/headaches worked up to identify the source and control.

Hypoglycemia : Nocturnal hypoglycemia is the biggest risk factor for overnight seizures in patients who are on medication for diabetes.

my husband had a diabetic  seizure 5 days ago and seems very forgetful and disorientated afterwards still, is this normal?

It could be. He: may have suffered slight brain damage from the seizure,which  hopefully will clear with time. If not better soon,get him to a Dr.
