HERE'S A FEW: Drugs approved for diabetic neuropathy include lyrica, (pregabalin) cymbalta, and a medical food, metanx.  However, additional meds may be useful, and physical or osteopathic therapy might help the back pain.  Might consider acupuncture.

Neuropathy typically: Manifests in numbness, often in the feet.  It can be secondary to diabetes as you suggest and can also be the result of chemotherapy.  Anything that damages the nerves, such as trauma, can cause it.  Please do what your doc says but a natural approach is using high doses of Alpha lipoic acid.  See a natural doc for guidance. High glucose: The high blood glucose directly damages nerves, bit by bit, over time, causing the neuropathy.  The high blood sugar also causes you to urinate a lot because  glucose gets dumped into the urine.  This will dehydrate you and cause a lot of thirst.

2: With peripheral neuropathy you MUST have your father's doctor seen by a Neurologist!

Get X-ray : Big toe fractures and 'sprains '( ' turf toe') are fairly common. If your ' stinging' continues see an Orthopedic Surgeon for evaluation.If the fracture extended into the joint ( as in any joint) you may be developing early arthritis . Treatment early can be fairly 'easy' w/ NSAIDs/ turf -toe liners, etc. Get an X-ray and get examined! Best of Luck!

Many...: Chemotherapy/exposure to chemicals, excessive alcohol intake, some neuromuscular diseases, and many more.  Sometimes the cause can't be determined and they label it "idiopathic".

Options: Good job with your diabetes!   the best meds for neuropathic pain are Lyrica (pregabalin) and or neurontin.  Talk to your doctor about a script.
