i spilled a lot of laundry detergent on my hand and rinsed it off. should i be concerned about chemical burns or anything like that?

Accepted Answer

No worries: If the exposure was limited to your hands and not to mucous membranes such as eyes or accidental ingestion, then there should be no issues with standard laundry detergent.  If you develop any allergy symptoms such as swelling, redness, itching, then take benadry or zyrtec (cetirizine) and followup with your doctor.

is any kind of laundry detergent and cleaning bleach, safe to be on your hands at the same time and when its even in your hands?

Accepted Answer

No, wear gloves.: It is not safe, it may cause inflammation that may make your hands age faster. There may  not be immediate sign other than tingling but it is not advisable to mix them nor handle either one of them with your hands without wearing gloves.

my wife is suffering from her dry hands. we don't know if this is caused by detergents. tried to use gloves but it worsens. she has cracked skins.

Accepted Answer

Allergy testing: She may also be allergic to a substance used in the gloves (ie: latex) which is why the gloves may be causing her to worsen. There can be many causes including chemicals, soaps, detergents, materials. She should see a dermatologist for patch test and an allergist for allergy testing. In the meanwhile try aquaphor or vaseline to help with the dry hands.

See below: Depends on how the exposure is.  If ingested, exposed to the eyes or a mucosa surface, the detergents can be harmful.  If you have any concerns about a present exposure, call your local poison control center for advise.

i have a 13 year old girl who has eczema on her hands. it get worse when she uses cleaning detergents how do i help her?

Contact dermatitis: She may have localized irritation of the skin and underlying eczema. Contact dermatitis may also be one consideration. Avoid harsh soaps, fragrance and immersion in water. Apply a thin layer of Corticosteroid topical ointment three times daily and use a lotion for eczema several times per day to keep the skin moisturized. can i get infected from an indoor jacuzzi in a rental house (in long island)? i did a basic wash with hand soap but did not scrub down with detergent.

Potentially yes...: Depending on the thoroughness of cleaning, the weakness of the soap used, the amount of microbes in the water, and your level of immunity, there are two types of infections  that can cause severe rashes/ folliculitis (a.K.A  "hot tub" infections): mycobacterial (eg. M. Fortuitum) and pseudomonal (eg. P. Aeruginosa).

Pompholyx: Pompholyx (dyshidrosis) may be caused by harsh detergents, stress or some other factors. Avoid them. Ask your doctor to prescribe a topical corticosteroid cream for 1-2 weeks.

hi, i used some chemical detergent without flies to clean the bathroom. got rush on one hand. healed after 3 weeks. however spread to belly by contact. how to heal? probably some type of yeast?

You developed: Contact dermatitis, allergic reaction to the detergent.
Go see your dr for treatment.
Steroid cream is the usual treatment.

i have been having extremely itchy skin. starts on hands and feet. sometimes on the rest of my body.  there are no marks to show any signs of rash.  that is until i claw myself to death. wondered if it may be a sign of diabetes. never had this before. lotion does not help. i have not changed any kind of soap or shampoo or detergent. i can take a benadryl and it will stop.

Scabies perhaps?: Extreme itching MAYBE DUE to a mite which causes Scabies. It is not due to diabetes.
You have to use a topical ointment from the pharmacy to stop it.
You can ask your pharmacist for available meds. Or call a doctor and
get a prescription medication once and done head to toe topical to stop the itching. 
It is common and easily treated once you have the correct diagnosis.

i had a fresh 42 hrs small wound on my thumb. i had no gloves when i had to wash someone else's fresh blood stain from their clothes. i had to rub a lot. i used cold water and and detergent. what are the risks of being infected with hiv, hcv, hbv?thx?

: From this description, there was little if any risk, even the other person has one of those blood borne infections. Cleaning a blood stain from clothing isn't the same as direct exposure to an infected person's blood by a sharp instrument. I wouldn't worry at all about this -- especially since you apparently have no reason to believe the other person has any of these infections.
