There are different.: ..."sprays" used for different purposes.  There are rescue medications like albuterol that help open narrow airways when breathing is labored.  There are inhaled steroids used to control inflammation adn cut down on the need for rescue medicines.  There are combination medicines that open airways and decrease inflammation.  This is something you should discuss with your doctor.

The expiration date is the last date the product is considered at its full strength. Some of these will still be good for a while longer if properly stored.

Don't believe that cough syrup will work, as it's primarily sugar with some expectorant. Don't delay, so you can start feeling better.

No info on external: Graprfruit is not good to intake with many drugs - Luvox (fluvoxamine) is one that can be a problem. There is no study I've found with external use of grapefruit - but why take a risk? It would feel really foolish if something went bad, right? So don't mix them. It can't be that important. Take care!

Generic is fine: I believe cream are better than spray because of direct contact to the skin. I think the  most effective over the counter cream is lamisil (terbinafine).
There are also many prescription meds if this does not work.
