R upper back pain: Do you have abdominal discomfort after eating? or with eating? May be gallbladder or constipation,possibly reflux  or disc disease would seek medical attention this week.

Lung Inflammation?: You may have inflammation in your lungs, and when you take a deep breath and your lungs expand, that is causing your discomfort.  Pleuritis is possible.  You may have a muscle sprain as well, and when you use your accessory muscles to breath, that are aches you.  See a dr. If it persists to get a proper diagnosis. Goodluck.

Likely no prob.: This is likely no problem, just you're probably not used to taking deep breaths and/or moving your shoulders back so much and it's likely just some crepitus or tight joints.

To figure out pain..: To figure out pain that happens only with deep breaths, one has to write down on a big calendar: when it happens, exactly what happens, what makes it worse, what makes it better, what food/drink/meds he took that day, what activities/sports he did that day, etc... Take the diary to the dr. With 3 weeks of data for evaluation. It could be the pleura (the lining), ribs, spine, nearby nerves, etc...

Pleurisy: Can be based on lung problem or simply INTERCOSTAL MUSCE Pull ( The small muscles in between the ribs)
A chest x ray is in order and you should see your Primary Care Provider for the results of that film and appropriate treatment!

i have a pretty severe cold and now when i take a deep breath in the is a sudden pain on my upper back on just the right side. should i be worried?

Right side pleuritis: is probably what you have but it could be also pneumonia too. You need a chest x-ray and exam. Call your doctor. If you can not get a hold of your doctor go to an urgent care center. In the mean time you can take advil (ibuprofen) or naproxene or motrin for the pain if it bothers you a lot.

Pulled muscle: You pulled a muscle.Rest, ice , and anti inflammatories will help.

Rhomboid strain: Likely strain to muscle group that attaches to your shoulder blade.  Try course of NSAID and warm compress.  If not improving get checked.
