Nasal steroid but: Nasal congestion is not the cause for an allergy cough but post-nasal drips and/or asthma may as would be a sinus infection. Nasal steroid remains the most effective if post-nasal drips are the cause for the cough.  You may need to consult a doctor re. the cough should nasal steroid fail or the problem gets worse.

Hypertensive sinus: Sounds as if you are either using too much decongestant and raising your blood pressure or have a sinus infection or both.  You should see you doctor and let him see what is really going on here.

Viral.....: This is likely a viral infection(perhaps flu) that will run its course over the next few days. For cough and chest congestion, see your doctor (since over the counter meds not working) as you may need bronchodilator and perhaps steroid inhalers to decrease bronchospasm that may be causing the cough. For nasal congestion, perhaps saline nasal spray (over the counter); see doctor if ineffective.

Not recommended: Using dextromethorphan (active ingredient in benylin) together with alcohol can increase nervous system side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, and difficulty concentrating. Some people may also experience impairment in thinking and judgment. You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol.  Don't risk hurting yourself, or others.  Good health!

No but: Each one has a version with the letter "d" attached. These are kept by the pharmacist and don't require a prescription but you must ask for them.  For example: Claritin (loratadine) and clartin d. Zyrtec and zyrtec d. The "d" version contains Pseudoephedrine which is a heart stimulant and can make your heart race. Check your med's label!

Good reason: You are right to be worried. You should consult a pulmonologist, a specialist in chest disorders. 
Any cough lasting longer than 2 weeks needs to be evaluated.

Chronic cough: A chronic cough needs to be seen by your internist or pulmonary docotr and/or ent, a cxr, asthma testing , blood test, test for whooping cough and fungal infection and make sure you don't have reflux or allergies, one shoulg not be using proair continuosly for one month.

Many: The best thing to do is ask your pharmacist when purchasing one, but most OTC cough meds are fine to take with the ACE inhibitor class. Interestingly, a dry cough is one of the most common side effects of the ACE medications (something to discuss with your Dr.).

Legal ; required: Yes. In many states, you must be 18 to purchase an otc product that contains dextromethorphan, a common ingredient in many cough syrups. Google robo-tripping to find out why, and be thankful your kids and their friends are being kept safe.

None: Studies in the US find little or no benefit to use of these products in kids under 6. The frequency of ER visits due to random overdoses lead to a re-evaluation of their use/benefits. A little chocolate or honey &amp; lemon  are old fashion treatments that help some, along with assuring good hydration.
