What's gone is...: Gone, but can function quite well with what's left. Colon is about 5-6 feet long. Can do well with the remaining amount. Any surgery can cause internal scars (adhesions), which could cause obstructive issues in the future (or not).

over 2 years post low anterir colon resection. 10 inches removed. osmosis is 5 cm to anal verge. still have urgency and problems evacuating. lifelong?

Probably: It's likely that after two years, the symptoms aren't going away. However, dietary modification has a huge impact on bowel function, so consider making some changes to your eating patterns, like adding more fiber by replacing some meats with beans, and see if that makes a difference in your bowel function.

had lower colon resection and still have pain when "going" after 8 months. fiber has helped to "soften" stool and the pain. pain ok after 8 months?!

Possibly: If the pain is chronic in nature - no new changes in past few days - and you do not have fever or decreased bowel movements acutely over past few days, this is probably a chronic issue you need to discuss with your family doc or surgeon. If there has been a recent increase in pain or decrease in bowel movements accompanied by nausea/vomiting, you need emergent medical evaluation.

i need to revise my question it is dark green not black that my husband is having after his colon resection is that normal?

: "Dark green" color of liquid stools is synonymous with "black", and may represent "old blood" from the anastomosis site, but could also be from upper colon or even the small intestine bleeding.  Check with your GI surgeon for testing and reevaluation if this continues.

my jp drain fell out was in for about month in half.   colon resection from cancer.  hole is still draining. blood and pus.  is this normal?

No: Any blood or pus coming out of any place of the body for any reason is not normal. Even abrasion with blood is not normal. Please see your doctor to make sure there is no infection in the area that needs to be treated and to put another drain if necessary. Good luck.

i had a colon resection done by da vinci on thursday.  i hate to bother my surgeon, but my belly is still bloated. is this bad?

Not bother: The surgeon and surgical team want patients to communicate how they are feeling post op. Contact da Vinci 's office and let them know how you are feeling. The surgeon who operated on you and knows your case is the best person to ask. Bloating probably ok. Make sure passing gas.

i had a colon resection surgery one year ago diagnosed stage 1 colon cancer.  i still have bouts of chronic diarrhea.  is this due to the surgery?

Depends: Diarrhea after colon resection can be related to removing a large amount of the colon. Try increasing your fiber to 25 to 35 g daily. This usually helps bind up some of the extra water in the stool. Sometimes other medications are needed as well. Contact your physician if you continue to have problems.

No, but...: ...Each case is unique, and depends on your history of prior diverticulitis, risks of recurrence, underlying complications, response of abscess to conservative management, co-morbidities, etc.
