i have an extremely sore throat on one side. right tonsil is very swollen with potruding dark red pimple like spot. this came out of nowhere.

Throat infection: The symptoms that you have described sound like your tonsil could be infected.  Although an infection could be caused by a virus, it may be due to a bacterial infection.  You should see a doctor and have your throat tested for  Strep.  A doctor can also determine if there is an abscess in your tonsil.  Antibiotics and possible drainage of an abscess would be warranted in that case.

Accepted Answer

Likely healing: The area after tonsillectomy can look dark red or almost black for a week or two.  After that, the scab should come off and it should look more pink while not being as sore.  If you have any concerns or it is getting worse or more painful after 5 days after the surgery, go to your doctor to have it checked out.

Healing: Infections in a post op tonsillar bed are pretty rare,  usually i put my patients on antibiotics after the surgery anyway.  The reddish black dots are the residual effects of cauterization and granulation tissue together.  Eventually they will turn back to the normal color of the oral cavity.

Not sure: Some with darker complexions can have areas of pigmentation in the mouth particularly on the gums next to teeth. The old mercury dental amalgams could leave a gray area on the tissue next to the tooth. Melanoma can occur in the mouth but rarely.  I suggest you see ENT for evaluation.

Tonsil spot: The most likely cause is just a small piece of food that became lodged in one of the crypts (holes) in your tonsils.  Try using a q-tip to dislodge it.

Tonsil stone: If you are feeling well and have no sore throat, this is often just a collection of postnasal drainage.  They typically will be cleared with gargling but can be left alone.

Throat infection: only if you have a fever and are actively sick.  I would just stay arms length from others and not cough on anyone.  You could get others sick by kissing them or mouth contact. You should be feeling better in a couple of days.  Good luck and feel better.

Tonsil stones : This is a very common problem. Most people can manage the condition by frequent gargling with listerine or hydrogen peroxide, gently brushing over the area with a soft brush, or using a water pik to dislodge them. Sometimes the tonsils may become chronically infected, painful, or swollen. Then it may be time to consider removal.  You should see an otolaryngologist and discuss.

Dr. can check throat: Throat symptoms can be from a strep infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or other virus (antibiotics not needed), or some other cause like allergies, irritants, acid reflux. A person usually sees his doctor if the throat is bothersome, is with moderate or high fever, or with much coughing or worrisome symptoms. Single whitish dot might be tonsil crypt material (stone) or a small ulcer sore.

i had a yellowish white spot on the flap covering my tonsils that was hurting, and another one formed the next day. originally i thought it was a scra?

Tonsils: If you have pain in throat, spots or "exudates" on tonsils, fever, no cough, and lymph nodes in the neck area you may have Strep throat. The white spots alone do not indicate Strep- could be even viral.
